I turned around and walked away, reflecting upon the imagery this mortal friend had left behind. No one could capture the feel of a chilled night as he had on canvas, nor the heat of the day, for that matter. I felt surrounded by the spirit of his artist's soul, as if embraced by a brilliant rainbow.
The long walk down the pathway back to the car left me shaky, in need of something stronger than my usual tea. The drive back home would take me past his favorite quiet tavern. As if by its own will, the car pulled into the near-deserted parking lot. Sitting silently behind the wheel, I wondered if I should even step inside the dimly lit but friendly bar. Moments later the crunching gravel underneath my footsteps reminded me of our long walks beside the river, down to 'the edge of reality' he used to say. A solitary tear rolled down my cheek as I pushed open the heavy wooden door, squinting in the too-soft light of the tavern, seeking a seat somewhere out of the gaze of all other eyes. Pausing briefly to compose myself before asking the bartender for a glass of wine, I silently surveyed the handful of patrons. That's when I saw him, sitting at the end of the bar, staring at me in puzzled recognition, though neither of us had ever met.

to be continued....

Edited to stay in present tense, to follow the first part. Any and all critiquing would be greatly appreciated!

I'll settle for just watching...

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Smiling at you. I just realized I have a tense change in the second part. I began with present tense, but forgot to re-read it before writing part two. LOL, it's a good thing I'm admitting to being a beginner at this. Before I merge these two, I guess I'll have to decide if I'm here/now or there/when. LOL

And how do you have a single tear run down "cheeks"? Hmmm...

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

You guys keep it up, and this may become a novella yet! Actually, I have several chapter ideas already in mind, and am just waiting to put it all together in Word. I've found that if I stick close to art and nature as co-themes, the words flow more  naturally than with some other themes.
Thank you for all your encouragement!

PS, wranx, did you buy those new paints yet?
