I was slightly early for my meeting, usual for me, as I left the shadows of the parking garage.  The day was hot and muggy with a brief period of bright sunshine that finally had burnt through several days of clouds and haze.  It felt good for about three seconds before the humidity began to slowly choke the breath from me.  It was not a particularly good day for a walk and I was not in the mood for one anyway, but sometime the events of the day make it so that you must go out into the noonday sun.  I caught myself looking for mad dogs and Englishmen but got distracted by the pretty girls in sundresses that barely covered the require areas and highlighted those that were covered.  Before I’d gone a couple of blocks the sweat was starting to pool beneath the curls of my hair and slide down my temples.  I paused briefly beneath one of the few trees and blotted the moisture with my handkerchief,  which gave one of the denizen of the shadows a chance to crawl out to display his pitiful condition and beg for spare change.  The brief walk in the hot sun had done nothing for my disposition, not particularly good at my best, but I reframed from telling him there was no such thing as spare change.  Instead I reached in my suit pocket and tossed him a gold dollar continuing along my way with not so much as a glance to see if he even caught it or had to go scurrying across the pavement after the coin.  I was lucky to catch the walk lights so as not to wait on the corner and be force to breath some truck’s foul exhaust.  The lunch crowds were wandering the sidewalks of the inner harbor happy just to be out of their cubicles no matter how hot as long as it was not raining.  Reaching the building that was my destination I took a reflective deep breath in the cool air conditioning pausing at the guard’s desk to check in before going to the elevator.  The cool had revived me by the time I got to my destination as I thought how the short walk had seem like such a trial.  A testament to the softness our society has become.  The meeting would be a boring time and I started to look forward to that hot walk back, maybe I’d relish it more on the return.
