Waking was barely discernable from the sleep, blending from one darkness to another. The visions left were similar to the starkness of what waking brought at the crow of the clock. But there was no one else there now, she had faded with the dream, and the still of the predawn almost let her whispers be heard wishing him back to sleep, back to her realm. But the day had begun and movement became self activation. First the socks, left foot first and before a thought could try to pierce the swirl in his brain he was dressed drinking his morning glass of Orange Juice and programming the alarm to pause its monitoring long enough to allow him to exit. By the first traffic light he was brushing the crust of last night from his eyes. The girl behind the counter started making his coffee before he left his car and reaching into his pocket found the money he needed from his purchase plus the tip. He didn’t notice the look from the man that had walked in just before him and was taking time pondering what donut he’d have, that man didn’t realize the advantage to consistency. He parked in the space he always did and keys on his ring in order opened the series of locked doors till he was sitting at his desk sipping the coffee.
