somebody's dungeon

I wasn't supposed to be there. It was late, the lights were dim in the hospital nursery. The nurse saw me come in, she simply gave me a nod. No words were spoken, we both knew, I wasn't supposed to be there.

I searched for the name, just the last, no first name was gifted this angel. Finally, I found her, off in the corner. Only one other tiny bed next to hers. This child was also nameless. Just "boy" and a last name. The two of them looked lost in the vast sea of babies, all of whom had names.

I reached into the tiny little bed, and gently, ever so gently, touched the top of her head. I could feel where the intrusive electrode had been attached to her tiny scalp. She had hair the color of honey, soft as silk, and sticking up every which way. I didn't want to wake her. I didn't want her to cry, for I knew I would not, could not, resist the urge to pick her up, cradle her in my arms, and then steal her away. I watched her stretch, I heard her coo, I held back my tears, and then, in an instant of heartbreak that will live within me forever, with a soft kiss upon her hand, I said my final goodbye.

hooo, a sad piece you've written here.  It's always interesting to think about these kinds of moments.

The story was extremely dream-like, a perfect sort of atmosphere, I think, for this style of writing.  The title is almost ironic in that the narrator, with her mysterious aura of being out of place, comes off looking more like an angel at times than does the baby.
