Last fall I was promoted to the position of City Assessor in our small Michigan community.  Filled with a few insecurities, I remained comfortable since I had the assurance that God had brought me to this opportunity and would help me through the rough spots.

He has... and is...

This is our busiest time of the year.  I should have been stressed out, but with a few extra hours everything was coming together very well.  Then two weeks ago, I slipped on the ice and broke my ankle.  I was really perturbed.  This is not the time of year an assessor can be missing work.  But despite the circumstances, I felt this calming assurance that everything would come together and all would be well.

Then last week, just as the last figures had been finalized and the assessor’s values frozen, I got (as did all Assessors in Michigan) an urgent fax from the State Tax Commission.  It seems, buried deep within the software slept a very cruel bug, that was miscalculating some of the figures.  I thought my hair would turn gray as I began analyzing the damage that had been done.

After time on line with our programmer and final updates my problem virtually vanished to nearly nothing.  I breathed a sigh of relief but did not fully appreciate how fortunate I was until speaking to the programmer and learning that some Assessors were dealing with massive problems.

I could not help but feel truly thankful and aware that the confidence I had felt that all would come together had not been misplaced.  This confirmed my confidence that God brought me to this position and He would enable me to meet the challenges which the position presented.  He has.  (Yeah, I know it could have turned out differently, and if so, I am still confident the problems would have been resolved.)

It has been quite hectic and busy, but with a broken ankle, a sour computer and weather that just would not let me walk out the door without wondering if I would slip again... all has gone very well.  I just had to share - that no matter the circumstance - well, God is bigger than the problems.  His grace even abounds when computer bugs threaten our sanity, bones ache, and the weather spits out foul white stuff that solidifies into icy sheets under hobbling feet.

Today I’m smiling.  The worst is mostly over - and even better the sun is shining.    Glory be - I feel great, and very grateful.

Good for you! It's nice to have such faith or confidence in any higher being. It's a peaceful feeling, too, knowing someone's up there. That you aren't alone.

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown
