Migraines and Loss
By Larry Chadwick

Having suffered from migraines, I know what it means to experience chronic pain. Two years of that was enough. I gave them up. Migraines weren’t that much fun anyway. It was one of my better choices. My only error was I should have done it sooner.

I’m suffering from chronic loss. Now I know what it means to experience chronic loss. Six months of it is enough. Trouble is I can’t get rid of it. It isn’t that much fun. I was given no choice. My only error was I wasn’t prepared for it. It started when my daughter died at 28. It isn’t going to end. I’m preparing myself for that.

It turns out that migraines and loss have something in common. They are good for the soul. Painful…but good for the soul. They have both taught me things about life that I never understood before. Broken hearted people are tender hearted people. And there are more of them than I knew. I couldn’t manage chronic loss without them.

I am still somewhat at a loss of what to say, but I know I must say something. Something inside of me insists. Yet, the same thing tells me that it is not enough to simply say that I understand, or that it was well-written. Somehow, it simply isn't important. Maybe I just need to tell you I read, and was deeply moved.

Thank you.

JM,
And heaven knows that you are one of them. Bless you for all you mean to me and others. Heart hugs.

Kielo,
I am very touched by your response. And believe me when I tell you it is more than adequate. Thank you for caring enough.

Skyfire,
Have I told you lately, you are a sweet thing. Because you certainly are. Thank you.

This...

is when we learn to walk softer,

contemplate longer,

forgive a little easier,

hug longer,

and intensify each word we utter
with hope.

How inadequate to say I'm sorry for your loss and pain - but I am. Prayers!

I still get migraines, and can only say as regards the loss that I do understand your pain. Peaceful hugs to you dear friend.

amigo,
Wonderful is good! Peace to you friend. And thank you.

Kacy,
My migraines lasted three weeks to three months. They ultimately caused terror in my heart. I HAD to give them up. And thank the Lord for a good neurologist! Peace to you sweet lady. I wouldn't wish migraines on my worst enemy.

Larry,
to be honest, my "seasonal variations" piece was kinda modelled on this prose of yours. I had all these thoughts running through my head but didn't know how to connect them all together..then i read "Migraines and Loss" and thought that there was a good technique to link several aspects of a story together..hence, the concept "seasonal variations" was born....

imitation is the best form of flattery huh?

Larry,
I thank God for tender hearted people.  It seems to me they are what makes the world go round.  I can't say I know you exact pain but I do understand.  A hug is always here waiting for you!
Love you

I suffered from migraines for 25 or more years.  No one ever suggested to me they could be connected to loss.  I had so many.  My first love, miscarried babies, twins with one dead and it goes on and on.  Thank you for that insight it keeps me from thinking there may be something wrong with me.  I am so sorry for your loss, nothing can be worse than the loss of a child.  I cry for you.  Love, Barb

Barb,
Seems my losses pale in comparison. I only had migraines for two years. I did everything that the doctor ordered my to do. And it was a long list. He indicated that I was his first patient to follow all his instructions and he was very excited to know that it eliminated my headache. I'm sure it isn't always that easy. Anyway, bless you for your peace and courage and your kind words.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Larry- Yes, I have noticed a trend in loss and it just happens to be one right after the other.

Larry,
you would never be able to realise how much I understand this. Except... I still have the migraines despite doing everything the doctors (about 8 of them) have said.
They started before the major losses though, maybe I knew what was to come, I don't know.
But I know no matter how much the chronic pain hurts, the chronic loss hurts so much more.
thank you for this...
Always, Alyssa

Kellie,
Sorry I missed your response. You are truly faithful. Thank you.

Alyssa,
I'm sorry both for your chronic loss and your chronic pain. They seem to hurt equally. May you find strength, courage and peace.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
