A year makes not one bit of difference. It has not lessened the utter sense
of remorse that I can still feel. A year has not diminished the pain my heart goes
through when my memory comes back. The sky is just as clear as it was then.
The lazy days of a summer ending. Long shadows making their mark quietly,
even in the morning hours. Fall is around the corner, but I fear its saddened
days to be. I fear my own tears that still come and wonder, always wonder if they
will ever go away.
I watched like the rest of the world. I watched the fire on the tower, the
smoke making a sickening cloud around it. For the longest time I was awed by
the scene, by how it did not seem real. I watched with my own thoughts, on the
accident. Until that second plane.
Days went by that I cannot remember. I do not recall how work went, what
I even worked on. Time slid by me in earnest, causing a strange effect on my
thinking. I only remember going there and after a time leaving for home. What is
still clear, what still comes to me are the reports. Everyday I tuned into the public
radio station, which only played the latest news. The tolls. The numbers. The
cost to us all, we understood, it would be bad. No. Unbearable.
A month slithered by, then another. At times, honest happiness would
then be followed by slight outbursts of joy. But always there was something more
that would flow from the inside. That little tug of pain that would cause me to
want to breathe. The war came of course. More B.S., a hell of a good smoke
screen, but in reality what was being accomplished. We sit in this country
looking for leadership and come up with nothing more than political correctness.
A year has passed by and still I see it in my dreams. I see the people, the
eyes of witness’ who looked upon hell. Of all, the most vivid is the woman who
jumped rather than be burned. Not the fact that she jumped, but while she did so
she kept her hands down by her sides. Here she was, moments from death and
yet she worried about her dress, about her dignity. I see her at times, wondering
who she was and morning her grace.
A year has gone by and as the day comes close I cannot sleep. I cannot
take the onslaught of nightmares that have returned. I look to a god that may or
maynot listen. I want the pain to vanish, but it won’t for years to come, if ever.
The year comes close, and I shall stay home attempting to harbor my demons.
A year has gone by, and still we weep.

Michael,
As we should.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

You have the gift of expression.  I believe you have described the feelings of so many who "A Year Later" perhaps, are still at a loss for words. As long as our hearts still beat, there will be a better tomorrow.  Thank you for writing this sad, but perhaps, necessary prose.

From a Canadian point of view, we send our love and hope for a better tomorrow.  We too saw the horrific event unfold before our eyes, and like everyone else, we sat paralized at the surreal heartbreaking reality of it all.

It is a blessing to have wings for words and passion in pen.

This reminds me of an experience I had in 8th grade...a classmate of mine attempted suicide. The day that it happened, our entire class was distraught, shocked, and unbelievably saddened. The next day at school, a group of girls was sitting quietly discussing their sadness and a boy walked by, overheard them, and said, "You guys are STILL talking about that? Get over it!"

There are things in life you do not and SHOULD not just "get over"...there are things that should never be forgotten.
Thank you for your beautiful post.

Michael, You are expressing feelings many of us have, and will continue to have.  This is not something that SHOULD be forgotten.  As horrifying as it is to remember; remember we should, and stay alert. Do we really believe this is all over? Well written piece.  Wanda

All thought must turn to action, and in remembering, we fortify our soul of the losses, and of what we will gain if we act rightously...

It's been a while, my friend, since I last saw your words....I am glad you have come back to us....

Back to the top.......

For all we've lost, and all we have now gained.
