My Daytime Dreams

I was sitting on the curb of an old cistern one hot and sticky day in July. There was a large weeping willow tree close by, and the breeze was slowly blowing the hanging branches across my bare feet. I wore a dress that had been handstitched by my mother. She made all our clothes from the flour sacks from the old mill. We were fortunate that our mother could stitch our clothes together by hand for we could not afford a sewing machine. I was looking down at the dress thinking how glad I was the print was pretty. I remembered going with my parents to the mill, and watching Mother stand there selecting the print on the sack before purchasing the flour. I thought that was the way material for dresses was selected at that time. I know there were other mothers doing the same thing, and ladies would line up trying to determine which material they wanted for their next sewing project.

As I sat on the curb of that cistern, I felt something brush up against my arm, and turned to look. There was one of the kittens that had been born recently. It must have escaped the watchful eye of the mother cat. I reached out to pick it up and stroke its’ fur. I cuddled the kitten for awhile, but soon I could hear the mother calling for the kitten. It scratched me in its’ hurry to get down, and go find its’mother.

You wonder why I was seated on the curb of the cistern? I was dreaming about my future; and what I wanted to be when I became an adult. I knew that I did not want to live in the country, and be denied all the pleasures the world had to offer. I had dreams of becoming a famous singer or movie star, and moving to California with all the sandy beaches and famous people. I just had to figure out a way to accomplish my goals.

I sat there spinning dreams while beads of perspiration dripped down my face and arms. I thought to myself, “I doubt if any movie star would be perspiring like this.” I could see myself wearing long silky gowns enbedded with precious jewels. I’d be walking two well-groomed white poodles with red ribbons in their hair. Their collars would be made of diamonds. People would be whispering how beautiful I looked, and handsome men would offer me their arm.

I heard my name being called. I knew it must be my Prince Charming coming to take me to the theater. I heard my name called once again, and I awakened to see my mother standing there with a dust cloth in her hand saying, “It’s time to wake up and finish the dusting.”

Once again my beautiful daytime dreams were put on hold.
