PART #2

The next day I was riding my bicycle down to Honey Creek south of town. It was one of those hot, sticky days; and I knew I needed to cool off a bit.  I couldn’t think of any better way to do that then to go swimming. Now, in my day, we didn’t worry about swimwear.  We got ourselves to the creek, dropped our clothes, and jumped into the water.  Honey Creek was the favorite “hang-out” in the summer for the boys in town.  Life was pretty simple back then; we took our pleasure where we could find it.

When I got out to Honey Creek, I could hear splashing and hollering like some ole elephant was in the creek.  I got off my bike a short way from the creek bank, and leaned the bike up against a tree.  Peering through the leaves I tried to see who was in the water.  I couldn’t believe my eyes; there was Gilmore and his dog.  Everyone who knew Gilmore knew that dog had fleas. Well, there was Gilmore in the creek with all his clothes on just having a good ole time.  I thought to myself, “What kind of nut gets into the creek with all his clothes on?  Why, if I did that, my mom would tan my behind. She’d take one look at my clothes and she’d say, “Billie Rae, you’ve been out to that creek, and you got your clothes all wet and messy.”  I usually tried to do what Mom told me; it sure made life go a lot better.

I watched Gilmore for a while; but I knew I was either going to have to jump in the creek or head back home.  The mosquitos were playing taps on my skin.  I didn’t know what to do; I wasn’t wild about having to drive back to town, and not even have the opportunity to get cooled off.  But, I didn’t relish the idea of jumping into the creek with Gilmore and that dog he called “Flea Bag.”

Finally the heat and mosquitos got to me.  I decided I would jump in the water.  I took all my clothes off except for my skivies, and then jumped into the creek.  I guess I must have startled Gilmore for he jumped like he had been shot or something.  I had to laugh for I thought he must have drunk half the creek when he fell into the water.  For a moment I was afraid he was going to be mad at me, but he just stood up and laughed. He said, “Billie Rae, you like to have scared me out of ten years of living.” I laughed too for that dog, Flea Bag, was bouncing around in the water like he was trying to chase a squirrel.  I had to admit it was a funny sight.

Gilmore asked, “What are you doing out here Billie Rae?”  I told him I had come out to get cooled off.  “I don’t suppose have a Coke on you, do you, Billie Rae,” he asked. “No,” I said.  I wondered how long it would take before he started mooching.  “Why don’t you just go into town and buy yourself a Coke,” I asked.  He looked sort of sheepish; and then he said, “I don’t have any money Billie Rae.”

I felt sort of bad when Gilmore said that.  I guess because I was a “lil strapper” I had never thought about the fact that Gilmore had no money.  I didn’t even know where he lived.  Everyone just tried to avoid him, because he was always pulling some stunt to get someone to buy a meal or something for him.  I felt like someone had turned on the light in the darkness of my understanding of him.

Gilmore was still splashing in the water with Flea Bag.  I don’t know, maybe that was the way Gilmore took a bath.  He never did look too clean.  I watched him a while longer, and then I said, “Gilmore, do you mind if I ask you a question?”  He stopped for a moment, looked at me, got that goofy grin on his face, and then he said, “Ask me no questions, and I’ll tell you no lies Billie Rae.”  I thought to myself, “What kind of answer is that?”

To be continued...
