Tabby Moon 2 of 8

Tabitha had gone weird when she was 16 and I was 13. She’d just decided one day that being normal, being nice, and being a girl was all too boring. Dad had laughed when she came home with no hair, a pierced eyebrow, and bags full of men’s clothes. Mom had told her proper girls don’t do that. Tabby had told her something else proper girls didn’t do (that I hadn’t really understood at that age, and have forgotten by now), leaving Mom speechless.

She’d spent a year getting everyone used to her new image, then she’d started some brother-sister bonding with me, because sibling rivalry was as boring as everything else. It was around then that we’d watched the full moon together.

“See? There!” Tabby pointed out the window, at a cloud far away that kept flashing light. “Perfect, isn’t it?”

I watched the lightning for a while, then looked back at the moon. “How far away is it?”

“Since you can’t hear it, it’s pretty far.” She wasn’t really paying attention to me. She was staring at a point between the moon and the lightning.

“Not the lightning, Tabby. The moon.”

She put her arm around my shoulder. “Too far, Bro. Seeing as how we’re never getting our hands on a rocket, it would take a while to get there.” She blinked, and a few tears ran down her cheeks.

“Tabby?”

“It’s so awesome, Neil. Imagine being out there, floating in the moon’s halo ... or riding the lightning. Purity and destruction, and they’re both so beautiful, but they’re both so far away...” She lost the dreamy look in her eyes and wiped her tears away. “How long do you think it’d take to fly there? Like without technology. I’m talking magic, so you can fly. How long would that take?”

“Years.”

“How many?”

“How should I know?”

“You’re the smart one, Neilster.”

“Maybe four.”

“Hey, I’ll only be 21. Think I should go for it?”

“What?”

She shook her head. “Never mind, Bro. I’d never abandon a poor, defenseless 14-year-old to Miss Bitchness herself.”

Mom wasn’t Tabitha’s mother, and they’d never gotten along. Tabby had never gotten to meet her real mom, either.

“Hey, guess what?” Tabitha stood up and abandoned the window. She drew the curtains before leaving the room.

“What?” I followed.

“I’ve found the perfect way to piss the Not-so-Mom off.”

“How?”

“Girls.” She grinned.

I blinked. “What?”

“Is that not understanding, surprised, or being totally grossed out? Really, I thought guys your age thought lesbians were cool. You know, the ‘can I watch?’ stuff.”

“Yeah, but--”

“But I’m your sister.” She hung her head. “I’m sorry. Yeah, that’s got to have left you with some bad images... But hey, if it’s any consolation, I’ll make sure I can hook you up with a hot ex.”

“Tabby--”

“Neil.” She took me by the shoulders and looked me straight in the eyes. “It’s fine if this weirds Dad out. I want it to give the grand high bitch goddess a heart attack. But I care what you think. If this is too much for you, that’s got to mean I’m going too far.”

I thought for a while. “Why’re you doing this?”

“What do you mean?”

“Is this one of those image things? Are you just proving a point?”

“Neil--”

“No, either you’re proving a point, or your hormones agree with your choice. If your hormones agree with your choice, I’m cool with it.”

She smiled and gave me a thumbs up. “You are the coolest little brother. Thanks. First hot girl I see, I’m there.” She left the room, and I knew she was off to watch the storm again.
