CHAPTER THREE:

She had no weapons, nothing to defend herself with.  Simply put, he was a man and he would overpower her in a battle of strength.  Summer did the only thing she could do.  She turned and ran.

It wasn’t long though, before he grabbed the hair that blew in the wind behind her.  He yanked hard on in and her body hit the sand hard.  Pain rippled through her body.  The executioner wound his fingers through her hair getting a better grip then he proceeded to drag her.  It felt like he was trying to rip her hair out and the sand was skinning her alive.  Summer struggled in vain until she realized that there was no escape for her.

A calmness settled over her.  Summer accepted that she had reached the end.  There would be no more last minute evasion of the inevitable.

Summer suddenly thought about the world that was just beyond her view.  It was then that she realized Skesis’ world could very well be her savior.  Out the corner of her eye she saw a flash of metal.  She reached for it quickly.  She cut her hand by the way she had reached for it but that didn’t deter her for a moment.  In her hand was what would save her life. She held Skesis’ scimitar.  Without a second thought she used it to shear her locks of hair.

Summer rolled and quickly rose to her feet.  Her killer looked at the hair in his hand and tossed it at her angrily.  He rushed her and Summer’s hand tightened on the sword.  She was ready to use it to kill him but as suddenly as she grabbed it, it disappeared.

Bewildered and afraid Summer turned.  If she hadn’t shifted once more into Skesis’ world she would be dead.  She knew turning her back on her enemy was stupid but she had shifted once more into Skesis’ world.  Therefore she was safe and was determined to remain so.  He stood with the scimitar in his hand looking at her disapprovingly.

He reached out and touched her butchered hair.  He didn’t comment on it and for that Summer was grateful.  “There are many things I much teach you little one.  The first is that no one uses my weapons but me.”

Summer looked around just to double check and make sure she was in the little villa.  When she was sure she was she let out a sigh of relief and forced herself to concentrate of Skesis’ words.  “Lesson two: You must learn to hold yourself in our world.  The veil between our two worlds is thin.  It’s very easy to go back and forth between the two.  It will take discipline and concentration.  I won’t lie to you.  It will be hard.  When you rest you may even slip back into your world but—” Summer cut him off because his words were unnecessary.
“There is no need to continue with lesson two.  I will not be slipping back again.”  She said it with such determination that he couldn’t help but believe her.  He also admired her unwavering belief in herself.  “Lesson three,” He looked at her disheveled state.  The cuts and scrapes that covered her, the unevenly cut hair that moments ago could be called luxurious.  “Will be on how to defend yourself.  You will have to know how to care for yourself.  I will not always be with you.”

If fear could be tasted then Summer was tasting it then.  In fact, she was feasting on it.  He intended to leave her alone.  Alone, in a strange place.  “You will be guarded until you are capable of defending yourself.”  When she could no longer keep silent she asked the question that was plaguing her.  “Why won’t you always be with me?”

Skesis looked into her eyes that were clouded with fear.  Sadness struck him.  He couldn’t imagine what atrocities she had seen.  He knew nothing of her life before him.  All he knew was that her world was a harsh one.  He figured that was the reason for her sudden slovenly appearance.  He patiently explained.  “As I told you before, these are my people.  I am their King.  My kingdom covers the entire globe so from time to time I must go visit other areas.”

“Why can’t I come with you?”  Skesis gently touched her cheek.  “Because you are not ready.”
“Ready for what?”
“Ready to be my Queen.”

Summer shook her head.  “I can’t be your Queen.”  Skesis’ brow rose inquiringly.  “Why not?”  His tone was indignant.  He was upset and Summer sought to soothe him.  “It isn’t that I have something against you.  I don’t.  It’s just that it would take a considerable amount of strength to rule your people.  I don’t have that and I don’t even know anything about your people.  I don’t know what you are.  How can I rule the unknown?”  “I can rectify all that.”  Summer continued on despite his reassurance.
“I’m not even the same species as you.”
“That can be changed as well, with your permission of course.”  This surprised her slightly but she decided to question him about that further at another time.
“Why me?  You could have chosen anyone.  I’m sure there’s someone else more qualified.”
“Little one, your power called me half way across the world.  I sense in you the power to restore my kingdom to the glory it once was.  I can’t have that with anyone else.”

“In our ancient scrolls there is a story of two women; one a warrior and the other her charge.  Separately the two were powerful but together their strength knew no bounds.  I believe the same can be true for the wife I choose and I.  I have searched everywhere for this woman but never found her.  I had almost given up until I came upon you.”  “So it’s power that you want.”  Skesis shook his head.  “I want to make my Kingdom whole.  You can help me do that.”
“How can you say such a thing?  You don’t even know me.”
“I know you like I know myself.”

Summer’s lips curved into a grin. “You must not know yourself very well.”  Amusement sparkled in his eyes.  “What if you come to regret this decision?  You’re making me seem to be much more than what I am.”
“That’s where you’re wrong.  I’m probably underestimating you.”
“Skesis…I don’t know.”
“Give me time to teach you our customs.  Let me help you accept us as your own.  Then you can make your decision.”  Summer thoughtfully considered this.  The least she could do was give her the opportunity to see whether or not she was capable of handling the job of being his Queen.
“All right.  I’ll do it.”

It all seemed so surreal.  Her mind was spinning.  There was so much that she had to think on.  He wanted her to be Queen of his people.  Why was he desperately seeking a Queen?  It had to be some major reason if he’d choose one out of the humans he so obviously despised.    What did he see in her that she couldn’t see in herself?  What did he know about her that she didn’t?  Only time would tell.

Jackie,
loved the questions at the end, and your writing is improving all the time. I would suggest you use something elipses (...) or a dash (-) to mark time shifts. Other than that the story flows very well indeed, and I am getting involved.

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown
