The Heart of Texas

The room was spinning out of control. She had taken one of the pink pills, and when it hadn’t taken effect, she had popped another one. Twenty minutes later, when the pain was still pounding, she had taken a third. Now she was spinning. Reality slipping away from her moment by moment.

Scenes of her life began flashing through her mind, she saw the drawings she had made on the walls as a child. The first time swimming in a pool. The time she had broken her arm playing softball. The first kiss. Smoking cigarettes in the woods. Multiples of flashes went through her mind, as she struggled to move from the couch.

A knock on the door, tried to force her back to consciousness as delirium threatened to overtake her. She heard the familiar call of maintenance; they had been coming to fix the plumbing. The key jingled in the lock, but she was oblivious to it.

She continued zooming through the flashes of events in her life, as a white light began to grow stronger in the background of her mind. It was calling her.

The young man entered the apartment, and called out “Maintenance” As he turned to close the door, he saw her sprawled half on the floor, half on the couch, naked and mumbling incoherently.

His first reaction was to flee, but a force placed on his shoulders, forced him to stay. He began to speak to her, softly at first then in louder tones, trying to rouse her. He picked up his walkie talkie, and began muttering instructions to his unit dispatch, unsure what was wrong with her. They would call an ambulance.

He had gone through EMT training, he knew what to do. Scanning the room quickly, he found the pill bottle spilled on the end table. Checking her pulse, he realized she was barely breathing. He was going to lose her if he didn’t act fast.

Pushing her up on the couch, he elevated her head, and looked through the kitchen for something to make her gag. He retrieved the trashcan, and some Ipecac from the cabinet.

Speaking softly to her as he lifted her body softly, the mutterings growing more quiet. He forced some of the vial liquid down her throat, and she gagged softly.

He tipped her so she leaned off the couch, and elevated her so she could expel into trash can.

He could hear the sirens in the background, they would be here soon. “Hold on mam they will be here soon, stay with me”

He began speaking softly to her, mostly to calm his nerves, he knew she was very close to going over the edge.

She had began to walk towards the light, as the scenes began to slow, she felt like she was walking through soft jello. A handsome young man was there, he offered her his arm, and smiled down at her. He spoke softly, “Its not your time dear.”

She looked up at him, not understanding, as they continued to move towards the light. The images were slower now, less intrusive, but still flashing before her eyes.

“Time for what,” she spoke to him not understanding.

“Its not your time to join us yet. Behold,” with that he moved his other hand, and revealed an image of her on the couch, as the young man worked to try and help her revive. “he is working to save you even as we speak. The choice is up to you.”

“What choice, I don’t understand.” She cried softly. “Am I dead?” A sigh of calm and relief washed over her, as she thought of all the trials she could leave behind in this moment.

The man all in white smiled and chuckled softly, “No, your not dead. Your more alive then you have ever been. But this is before your time, and you have been given a choice.”

The young man, kept talking softly to her. “Please don’t leave me, stay here with me.” Brushing her hair from her face, and pulling the cover up to cover her exposed flesh, he couldn’t help but notice how attractive a young woman she was, even in this state.

The medication was one to ease pain in controlled doses, but was lethal if too much was consumed. Dammit, he thought to himself, please don’t die. Willing her to wake up, he could hear the sound of the emergency personal climbing up the steps. They would be here in a few moments.

Whispering to her, he spoke “Life is too important, stay here. Think of the roses, and the feel of the sun on your skin.”

As if by some unknown magic, the man in white revealed these words to her, in the white corridor, and flashes from her own life, of picking roses with her grandmother, and sitting on the beach as a child. With calm patience he spoke to her with a soft command, “make your decision.”

She thought of all the things that she had not completed in her life. She thought also of all the people, friends and loved ones she would be leaving behind. Sighing to herself, she also thought of the pain, and those that had come before her and waited for her on the other side, of the white door.

She could hear the music behind the door, echoing in the hallway, beckoning to her. She could also hear the paramedics beginning to work on her lifeless form to bring her back from the seeming beyond.

She thought of the summer days on the beach, and of the feeling of sand moving on her body. The feel of sun on her skin, and the cool water so refreshing from the heat of the day. She could remember all those sensations, but here she could feel nothing, no pleasure and no pain.

Looking down at the floor, she steadied her breath, and looked up at the kind man in white. Speaking softly with a voice that grew more steady as she steadied her breath to control her fears.

“I chose to live.”

WOW!!! This really made me think. My best friend tried to kill herself awhile ago. I dont know why she tried but this just brought that day back into my mind, watching her crying and struggling to get her words out. This is a good piece!!!

He retrieved the trashcan, and some (whatever that stuff is that is intended to make you puck, can’t think of the name of it)

P.S.~Are you talking about that Charcoal drink that disactivates the medicine???

*smiles* actually you busted me... forgot to go back and add it to that line... meant to put in Ipecac (the stuff that can be used to induce vomiting)

Thank you for catching it and for commiting!
