Part #4

Diablo and Sierra walked out of the stable toward the office of Adam Hopkins, Attorney at Law.  Stoner had told Diablo that was the place to start for some answers.  Hopkins had Molly McGuire’s will in the safe; perhaps he could find some information there that would be helpful.  Hopkins was drinking a cup of coffee when they walked through the door; he set the cup down, stood up, and offered his hand.  “I figured I would be seeing you one of these days, Diablo,” he said.

“I guess I’m a little confused,” Diablo stated.  “I know I have never met Mollie McGuire, let alone knew her well enough for her to leave a gold mine to me. What can you tell me about her?”

“Well, let’s see.  Molly lived over in the next county.  She had a large ranch, and raised cattle.  She also had a fine line of horses she shipped to various parts of the country.”  She was forty years of age when she died; she had never married, and I guess you could say she was a rich lady.  I’ve been told she had a string of fellows wanting to marry her, but she never took one up on the offer.”

Diablo wondered if that was all Hopkins had to tell him.  Sierra listened intently to every word Hopkins had to share.  She pretty much kept her thoughts to herself. At this point she thought that would be best. She would just wait and see what came to light before she shared some information about Molly with Diablo. Who knew, maybe the information she had was not all that important anyway.

“There is one more thing, Diablo, that I am to tell you.  I had been sworn to secrecy by Molly when she made out her will.  She said I was to tell no one until her death, and then I was to tell you only.” Sierra knew she wanted to hear that information.  Are you sure you want the lady here when I tell you this?”  Diablo looked at Sierra and knew she would have a tizzy fit if he asked her to leave.  He said, “It’s all right; she can hear.”

Hopkins walked back to the safe and pulled out a large manilla envelope with a thick string tied around the envelope.  It had an official seal across the string. He handed the envelope to Diablo and said, “I was to tell you Molly McGuire was not her real name. The information is in the envelope.”
