Part #2

Wrapped in the soft embrace of his arms, Sierra nestled her head against his chest.  He gently lifted her, and carried her to the interior of the stable, and then placed her upon a soft pile of straw. Once again, his mouth sought hers; and he whispered, “Sierra, my sweet Sierra.”

A rattling noise outside the stable made him stiffen, and he cautioned her to be silent.  He quickly stood to his feet, and reached for his gun.  He quietly strode to the stable door and stood waiting.

Soon the door began to squeak and slowly open.  The first thing Diablo saw was the end of a gun.  The door squeaked a bit more; and a burly man with a long beard, carrying a saddle bag spoke, “Diablo, you in here? I saw your white horse outside; if you’re here, show yourself.”

Diablo recognized the man as Stoner, the local sheriff.  He moved out of the shadows and said, “Hi Stoner.”  The sheriff looked at him and said, “I need to talk with you; you got time to listen?"  Diablo looked toward the interior of the stable, then said, “Sure, Stoner, what’s on your mind?”

Stoner told him of an old gold mine in the hills.  Someone had brought in some samples last week.  In fact, Stoner had brought some of them in the saddle bag for Diablo to look over.  It hadn’t taken long for the talk to get around that Diablo was back in town.  Stoner had gathered up a few samples and brought them with him.  When checking to see who owned the gold mine, it was discovered the mine belonged to Diablo.  The mine had been passed down to him a short time ago following the death of Molly McGuire.

“Now, that’s news to me,” Diablo drawled.  I don’t even know Molly McGuire.  Why would she leave a gold mine to me? I can’t believe someone, whom I have never met left me a gold mine.” Sierra was listening intently from the interior of the stable.  She, too, was wondering about Molly McGuire.
