He stood still a bit too long "playing the hand he was dealt". The hand, four diamond kids and a black hearted queen. The game took too long or maybe he thought that with patience he could outlast the odds. Suffering sweltering sea level humidity without the airy benefit of a sea.
He became rooted in sandy, unfriendly soil, each leg anchored by a probationary sentence fashioned of quicksand. Other weaker players noticed his broad back, proud bearing and piercing eyes and climbed on. Still he stood.
His aversion to alcoholic adultery and other-century notion of what makes men led him to revenge road. So suffered her pretty paramours.
Frontier's justice with a modern bent sided with the "civilized" Even with these hard odds a standstill.
But time erodes all eventually (ask the sphinx) and not being Atlas he ages, less rages and wonders if he'll ever live beyond the land of the executioner.
There is yet time to continue on his interrupted journey towards adventure in more picturesque climes and who knows, maybe the so far elusive love and peace. He yet stands.
