In the thick winter daylight as Overtone stepped lightly into the Mekali park, twigs could be heard falling delicately from tree branches onto the earth.  The soft, squeaky crunch created by the sound of the warrior's armoured feet upon the snowy pathway was all that could be heard, for the falling snow about created no noise whatsoever.  It was a perfect atmosphere for reflection, the surrounding wildlife mostly gone away into their living holes to hide from the bitter cold.  Overtone drew in a breath. For now, at least, he was safe from all of the impending dangers of the world.  There was no Lydan or Teryst in town to pursue him or any of his friends.  All was seeming to be well today, it was very peaceful aside from the friendly duel he has just recently had with his sister Ganamede.  For now he had questions to ask of himself.  In fact, everyone had questions for him. He remembered the last time he had this chance to enjoy nature about him.  Everything had all been so different then, before any of this recent event.  He would look down upon it all, as he was greater and more signifigant.  Now, however, he felt a strange emotion.  It had been biting at him for some time now, he was not so quick to identify it.  While staring into the snowflakes of the winter in Mekali, gently chewing upon the misty haze of the winter afternoon, he began to remember things he had heard... emotions he had seen... Overtone began to look at himself from the outside.   At this moment in time it was evident to him.  For the atmosphere now, he could see everything within him infinitely more clear.  He was a changed man.  And the emotion that was cutting him from the inside was one he had never felt before.

What had brought upon him this change... what had re-adjusted his soul so profoundly, he could not be sure.  He brushed some snow aside from a nearby bench, took a seat upon it and withdrew a parchement from his pocket.  This emotion would not go... it would not leave him.  What was the feeling of?  Something done wrong in the past?  Perhaps it was from not being able to protect Ganamede.  Perhaps it was from kissing another woman when his wife was absent.  There were numerous things that Overtone could simply not get out of his head.  A poem, he knew, was what he wanted to write.  But it wouldn't come out.  Poetry for an unknown emotion was wordless.  He couldn't write that now.
Instead, he began writing a letter.

Dear...

Alas, he was stumped.  Who would this be addressed to?  Who was he writing his letter for?  There were countless names that it could be.  A paradox.  Overtone decided he'd get back to that part.

I'm certain you've noticed a change in my behavior lately.  You've probably also noticed that I haven't seemed at all happy in most cases.  Sometimes I wander off, and wish to be on my own.  Sometimes I seem like I am angry at you for no reason, or like I am trying too hard to seem cheerful.  Sometimes you might even think that this is true.

He paused to tap the pen over his cheek in contemplation.  A single snowflake landed upon the tip of his nose, his hair began to frost up from lack of movement.  He was growing a bit cold, and could see his breath.  His life before his eyes, each breath sent out not by the same person born into this world twenty-one years earlier.  Each breath was from a stranger.

Perhaps it is failure that has been teaching me things lately.  Failure to protect you, failure to provide for you, and failure to comfort you in times of need.  Watching you fall to Teryst and his companions.  Wishing to care for you and only just learning what the true meaning of selfless love is.

This was epiphany for Overtone himself.  Writing this note was not him writing to somebody as he thought, but him organizing the puzzle inside of his mind.  This was Overtone putting it all into place.

All of these events have shown me something though.  Teryst and Lydan have all of the control of the realm, because of their power.  I, in reality, have no control.  With them killing those who are disobedient, we can't really do much at all.  What I see in the world these days is different than I saw only a year or so ago.  It is not good versus evil.  Rather, it is evil and good working together to create life.  Nothing, in fact, exists without a balance.  Good, evil... it is all the same.  None deserves any favour over the other, all of it must fall into place.

Harmony cannot be achieved with one side over the other.   What if we win over Teryst and Lydan?  Then we will be no better than them.  At that time, we will become them.  We will be the rulers of the realm that are feared for their power.  This is not what I want.  I want an eye for an eye.  I want revenge in no form but to place everything upon the same level.  What I wish to have is the world working under an equilibrium.  The universe in harmony with itself.  No longer do I wish to be any king.  I don't wish there to be a king.  What I want to see in my life is a world where it is all on the same level.  I want a world of harmony between good and evil, law and chaos.  All of it must be brought together.  In the world that I want, and what I will fight for, everything will be the same.  Everything will be under comprimise.  All of us will be upon this planet under the same power.  So strong is this new passion in me that I have no need for favouritism... I will not place myself above or below others.  I am as important as everyone else is.  I am a person, Teryst is a person, Lydan is a person, and you are a person.

The wind was growing strong, shrieking its protest at Overtone's interruption of the park's wild habitat.  This sacred place of nature was not something to be intruded by humanity.  Defiantly and with a passion, Overtone laughed bitterly into the wind.

I ask of you forgiveness for all that I have done.  I ask of you to forgive me for ever having put myself above you when I should have protected you.  I wish you to acknowledge that I am now different.  I am no longer one to be feared.  I am one that will function with you in bringing everything onto equality.  From this day forward, my sword is the creator of balance.

Nothing more than that.  Understand that I have been different lately, but it isn't going to change back to normal.  This is how I am now.  I am different.  No more selfishness, no more chaos.  Just balance.

Sincerely yours,
Overtone Evans.

A note completed, he knew.  And a thought within his head.  The information on the paper was written to him, by his mind.  Staring at the solitary word at the beginning of the letter, which he had promised to return and write a name beside, was stinging upon the page as a mistruth.  Overtone smiled solemnly to himself, a real smile this time.  He lifted the note and tore it to shreds, sprinkling the torn fragments of parchement into the snow, camoflauged among the flakes of winter as they precipitated from his cold and frosted hand.  The snow was beginning to end now, however, and he had no idea how long he had been gone for.  Now, only the winds of the winter park would ever happen upon the words he had written.  His newfound sense of self would shine in a different way.

His note would be worn upon his face.

Allan:

I am unsure as to why no one has replied to this piece yet.  I should like to point out first and foremost that you have made some gramatical errors.  THese, as usual, are simple missing semi-colons and so on.

Now about the story, itself.  I was very impressed with it.  You seem to be coming a long way.  This is way better than your first post in this forum.  Is this part of a series?  I am working on a series myself.  I was very impressed with your irony.  For example, the statement that the main character would be using his sword for balance.  You've done a good job in conveying some interesting lessons.  I especially enjoyed the way in which you described Overtone as writing and bringing things together in his own mind.

A very impressive piece despite any errors it may have had.  Congradulations, Allan.

Allan! This is a great story. And as for the few spelling and grammatical errors, they are easily fixed. You have good way with imagery also!
