Rest Stop

***

Valerie woke with a shudder. Then she heard it.

'tap tap tap'

She looked around. She had fallen asleep in the front seat of her car at a rest stop 20 miles from her mother's house. Rushing out the door last night, she told her mother she would drive straight through in time to make her grandmother's funeral today. Normally, she could make it in six hours. But traffic getting out onto the freeway was snarled. Four accidents and a rain storm delayed her.

'tap tap tap'

There! She heard it again. She quickly checked the locks on the four doors of her Grand Am. They were down and locked.

She looked outside and saw that it was 'full dark', as her mother would say. There were no lights shining anywhere. Which was odd. Last night when she pulled in, there were tall light poles each with a glowing bulb on top.

'tap tap tap'

Valerie held her breath. The sound seemed to be coming from underneath the car! Slowly she moved to sit up, terrified that she would see someone's face in the window. She closed her eyes and slid behind the steering wheel. When she reached for the key in the ignition and found it gone, her eyes flew open!

Where was it? She left it in the ignition, never expecting to sleep more than a few minutes. She fumbled around on the floor, reaching as far under the seat as she could. She couldn't find them!

'tap tap tap'

Breathing faster now, Valerie slid back into the passenger side of the car. She lay on the seat and reached her hand between the seat and the door. Nothing!

"Damn!" she cried. Where could they be?

The car shook suddenly. Valerie gasped! Something was under the car! Her heart beat loudly, so loud it seemed to vibrate in the small space in the front of the car.

"Get a grip!" she whispered. It was foolish, she told herself. The wind was making the car move and the tapping, well, the tapping must be something stuck under the car!

She reached for the handle of the door. The car shook more violently! This was no wind she quickly decided. She held her breath. God! What should she do?

It had a mind, it could think and it thought well. "She is frightened now I can feel her fear. Oh that feeling it's like sunlight on my face. Soon she'll go outside then she'll understand what is happening, poor girl. She will know just long enough to give one last burst of all her remaining fear. I love it when they do that."
tap,tap,tap
"oh there it is again she must be very afraid."
tap,tap,tap
"yes, more I want more of you fear."
tap,tap,tap
The thing was nearly having an orgasm from the fear it needed fear like a vampire needs blood it must have this young ones fear. It needed more fear. "Oh, yes, fear! more FEAR! YES!" the thing thought, "YES!."

Valerie was panicking.  Her blood pulsed with frightening force.  She didnt know what to do.

'tap tap tap'

The incesent taping was madening.  Every time she started to form a coherent thought there it came again, the tapping.  She was curled on the passenger seat of her pontiac with her arms wrapped around her knees rocking back and forth.

'tap tap tap'

She burried her head in her knees, trying to block out the tapping.  The whole care shook violently then.  The drivers side tires lifting compleately off the blacktop.  The car crashed back down with a screetch of metal and a groan.

'tap tap tap'

She remembered then a piece of advice her father had given her when she got her first car that she alwaysed followed.  She lunged into the back seat and grabbed her purse.  Setteling back in the passenger seat she unzipped her purse and began rifleing through it.

'tap tap tap'

The car lurched again, this time the passenger side rose of the ground.  Valerie banged her head on the passenger side window.  She blocked out the pain, desparately pawing through her purse.  "God damn" she swore, why did she have so much worthless junk in her purse.

'tap tap tap'

The front car spun around under the next impact of whatever it was out there.  At last in the bottom of her purse she felt what she was looking for.  Her spare ignition key.

She flung herself across the centre consol of the car, catching and tearing her skirt on the shifter.  She jamed the key into the ignition and turned it.  The powerful 3.8 litre engine roared to life.  Valerie couldnt imagine a better sound.....
please forgive me any spelling errors, for I am sure there are plenty.
