Darkness hung over her mind, just like the endless sea of night all around her.  Why did she have to end up here, like this?  Once she had been happy.  Once she had lived life to the fullest.  Times changed, people change, she thought sadly.  It was the last thought that ran through her head as she drifted off into a restless sleep.

Anya stood in a bright palace room, with white marble floors and elegant tapestries surrounding her.  She gazed around and saw familiar faces all around her, smiling and nodding politely in her direction.  A stab of fear hit her at the very depths of her soul.  "NOO!"  She screamed helplessly, "this is a dream!  Wake up Anya!"

A young man walked up to her, with a face full of concern and fear.  "My Dearest, why are you screaming like this?  Of course this is no dream.  Am I not real?"  More calmly, he reached up and touched her cheek gently.  He felt so real that she doubted herself for a moment.  She wanted so much to believe that the love he shown in his eyes was real, that it wasn't an empty gaze.

Suddenly, his mood shifted, and he began to laugh hysterically.  "Anya, did you honestly think that I ever loved you?  You are the prize at the end of the contest!   The prize that I have won!  I love you my dearest!"  The mocking went on for what seemed like an eternity, as tears of pain and anger streamed down her face.  This couldn't be happening, she thought to herself.  Most men chased after her because they wanted her title of The Lady Empress.  They wanted to be the Lord Emperor, but she couldn't believe he would do this to her.  Not him!

As if released from an invisible grip, she turned and ran, never knowing where she was going.  Somehow, the twists and turns of the corridors led her to the door of her room.  Entering quickly, she threw herself onto her bed, sobbing uncontrollably.  Why her?  What had she doe to deserve this feeling of betrayal?  Painfully slowly, she cried herself to exhaustion and fell asleep.

Anya looked down on her husband from the balcony above.  There he was, in the gardens below her, with the serving girl he had been eyeing contently for the past few weeks.  Now that the Lord Emperor had what he wanted, he could pursue other areas of interest to him.  A single tear slipped down her cheek.  "No more"  she whispered to herself.  "No longer will I stay.  You've taken my heart and my soul away, killing them both.  You've torn my life apart, but no more."  Taking one last look at the man she used to know, she walked slowly to the hidden passageway out of her room.

She followed the tunnel turns until at last she reached the stable yard.  Her brother and sister by marriage stood quietly in the dark, waiting for her.  They had a horse saddled  and ready for her departure.  "Take care of our people, my brother.  Don't let him take anything away.  I pass my kingdom onto you."  He gave her a brief nod and then embraced her.

"Take care of yourself," he said quietly and then she was gone, riding off onto the darkness.

Anya woke to the steady pattern of rain on the roof of the tiny inn.  It had been two years since word had reached her of the success of her brother in the War of the Storms, yet she could not go back.  The torture was done, but the scars would always remain; the scars of betrayal.  She was alone.

Some scars never fully heal, but they can be forgotten for the most part, with a little help of course.  Well written.

Powerful and stinging words, my dear friend.  Would you develop this into a bigger story?  That'd be awesome!   Hope to see more soon, dearie!

I really liked your story.  The way you made it seem like a dream but was not kept me captivated.

Excellent writing, Cassie! As with most of the other people who have replied, I'd like to see a sequel, or this one fleshed out even more. Great piece, even though, some of the best writing I've seen from you in prose

It was great most notably the build-up and the bitter climax.
