The Horsehead Nebula

The barren landscape stretched out before them for measures on end.  They had made a long journey, for this.  It was a desert wasteland.  There was nothing as far as the eye could see but sand, rocks, and more sand.  The company if 12 had landed the night before on the planet, preparing to set up base.  Mars was a barren land to the simple beholder, but to Maeta, it was a land of beauty and endurance.  She was born to be here.  Her lifelong dream had finally come true.

All that day, they worked, setting up a living area.  Later, areas for scientific research and a landing base for future shuttles would need to be constructed.  Leading all of this, Maeta was overwhelmed.  As captain of the mission, it was her responsibility to get everything up and running within a few months.  But, before anything else could be constructed, a protective dome had to be done first.  After this was constructed, the camp would be safe from any sudden windstorms, meteor showers, or anything else that would threaten the people of Mars 1.   The initial benefit, however, would be that the crew would be able to work easier, having a gravity they were more used to, as well as oxygen they could breathe, without having to suit up.

Quietly, she wandered to the canyon not far from base camp.  It was beautiful.  There had only been one thing that she had ever wanted more than this.  Slowly, images from her past drifted through her mind, and a silent tear slipped down her cheek.  Turning her face away from the canyon, she thought of other things.  The last thing she needed was memories of Jaydn.  He was long into her past, and far away on Earth.  She had fallen in love with him the first time she had seen him.  Slowly, her life had changed for the better as she had grown to know him better.  But, shortly after she was chosen to lead this mission, things began to change.  He resented her for everything that she was, everything she had been, and everything she had dreamed of.

Walking back to her little room in the living chambers of the crew, she went to the video phone.  Receiving a message from the people of NASA, back home, she moved once again outside.  Another shuttle was on its way, and would be there within the few weeks.  Everything had to be ready by that time.  As the days passed, she oversaw things as they were brought up.  The landing base was constructed as well as one of the research labs.

Nothing, however, could prepare her for what she saw the day they landed.  The crew had gathered to meet the new additions, 6 in total.  She walked up to greet them, but instead saw the first person to emerge, and ran.  She ran from the base to her room, and locked the door.  It was Jadyn.

An hour later, a knock came to the door of her room.  Choking back a sob, she asked who it was, knowing full well of the answer.  Why had he come?  Things had changed between them, almost destroying her soul, and now he was back.  Flying to a different place, she had hoped to put it all behind her… but he was only brought closer?  Why did she deserve such pain and suffering?  Washing the tears from her face, she opened the door and let him in.  She didn't' say anything to him, nor did she look at him.  She was in shock.

Turning her back to him, she stared at the wall, hiding her tears.  After what seemed like an eternity, he moved towards her, putting his hands on her shoulders.  "Maeta…please listen to me."  Wincing at the sound of her name on his lips, she nodded slightly.

"There's a reason I'm here.  I realized after you left just how much you meant to me.  It took losing you to realize I wanted you back.  Maeta, look at me…I flew all the way here to see you and tell you this.  Please…

Slowly she turned around.  She loved him so much, but was so scared to have him back.  She missed more than anything being in his arms.  Nodding slightly, she said she'd try.

Before anything else could be said, though, the emergency buzzer went off.  Running from the room, she saw what was wrong.  A meteor shower was showing up on the grid.  There was no time left for a goodbye.  Running for her helmet and suit, she quickly put them on.  Looking one last time at Jaydn, she saw that he really did care for her, but there was no time to tell him anything.  She was the only one that knew how to activate the shield dome.  By the time she made it to the tiny operation building, meteors were starting to fall to the ground.  Opening up the panels, she looked at all the buttons on the computer.

Hitting the last switch, she saw the dome start to build.  With a sigh of relief, she started out the door.  Suddenly, a meteor piece, the size of a pea shot down to the earth, penetrating her space suit.   She cried out as a tear slipped from her eye.  She never had a chance to tell him that she loved him.  And now that chance was gone.  As people ran for shelter from the shower, she fell to the ground, dying from the toxic fumes and the exposure.  "Jadyn," she said silently, "I have always loved you… I always will love you.  I say this now, and I will watch over you."  A final tear slipped from her eye as she fell into eternal sleep.

Interesting ideas!  I am wondering why he was so angry with her.  Was he jealous of her position or her knowledge?  I wonder why she could not accept his renewed affection.

Shanks for the reply.  I think he probably was upset with her just for the simple fact that she had changed.  When people change, they sometimes just drift apart.  And then, to make matters worse, she decided to run away.  And, she did take him back.. she just didn't have time to tell him that.  Sorry if it wasn't clear, it was just written in the emotion.  Thanks again.
