The rise to consciousness was unnatural.
With a startled gasp, bathed in sweat,
his eyes focused slowly in the darkened room.
The hooded figure stood motionless in dim light,
and the fear gripped him like a vise.

“Who are you?” he asked, his skin clammy and cold.
“You know who I am,” the voice whispered.
“What do you want? Money? Take it and leave”.
A low chuckle could be heard in the silence.
“What then. Take it and go.” His fear sharpened.
“I intend to,” the voice replied in a menacing tone.

“I am here for you. It is time to go. Prepare yourself.”
“Go? Go where. I’m not going with you. Who are you?”
“You know who I am. Come, it is time.”
Shaking now, he pleaded,”but, I am not ready.
I have so much more to do. I need more time.”

“You have wasted so much time already.
What purpose would it serve? You would simply
squander it as you have so many times in the past.”
“But, I will be missed,” he stammered, desperate now.
“People need me.”
“You have helped no one. You have loved no one.
Who will miss you? Who needs you?”
He could not answer. The truth hit him like a hammer.

“Where are we going?”
“Where you deserve to be,” came the answer.
The figure scooped him up like a rag doll,
and he cried in desperation,”no, I don’t want to go!”
“It no longer matters what you want or do not want.
The tally is complete. It is time to settle up.”
The figure dragged him into the darkness screaming.

He awoke with a start, tangled in the soggy bedding.
Gasping for breath, he looked around. He was alone.
It must have been a nightmare, he thought.
He laughed, nervously in the dark. A nightmare.
“Come, it is time to go,” the figure spoke again.
And the angel of death moved toward him.
This time he did not protest.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost
