Beneath Thy Armored Heart

Prologue

For nearly three centuries, I have wondered the cosmos in search of a worthy quest.  It seems bitterly ironic that my search would bring me back to the very spot of it’s origin, Terra.  Terrans are one of the more quirky races that have pushed out into the void and severed their celestial umbilical cord.  They seem to always stand just on the brink of total annihilation, then at the last possible moment, miraculously recover.  Be it full blown global war, or ecological chaos, they have always managed to beat the odds.
Though, my ancestors would have laughed at me, I believe that this race of short-lived, volatile creatures are destined for some great glory, what precisely hovers just on the edges of my prescient visions.  In permissions, I have seen the great edifice of the Dynasty crumble before the wrath of the NDE Redemption Squads, and the end of an era, stained in the blood of a million futureless children.  Though I cannot directly interfere with the fate of an entire race, my moral conscience forbids me to stand idle in the face of this coming apocalypse. So, against the wishes of my elders, I depart forthwith to the Human paradise of Terra.  There I hope to seek the city of Dakanis. And further to my ends, the path to shunt the flow of death and destruction that looms just outside their reality, waiting for the moment to suffocate them in self-annihilation.
Despite slight cosmetic mutations, humanity has changed little from its violent birth at the turn of the 3rd Age, nearly ten billion years after my ancestors first sailed through the trackless void.  Every step they take towards achieving transcendence is met by a tragic turn of events.  This act of violence canceling out intellect has been noted in other races, but only the Terran race suffers so chronically.
I stood in awe as the early morning light cast a menacing shadow over the pyramidal visage of the Red Palace.  The mammoth structure put the great Pyramids of old Egypt to shame.  Clearly, the Dynasty had spared no expense in the construction of its newest stronghold against the misguided zealots of the NDE. But edifices of stone and steel provide no defense against the changing political winds. Nor from the disease which comes from within…

Chapter One

The physician-major stood in stainless steel interior of the Medicore, casting his gaze over the newest admission.  Normally, a girl of such low birth wouldn’t have been admitted to this grade of facility, but she had come in as a special request for the Regent’s son, and it’s not wise to turn down such a request.  He didn’t mind, saving lives was his calling and he was happy to do what he could.
He glanced through her charts.  She had a large amount of TX-234 in her system, not to uncommon among the plebeians.  TX-234 is a highly addictive neurostimulant, but as with all stimulants, it has harsh effects on the heart and other vital organs.
He sighed.
Sixteen years old and on the verge of complete circulatory failure.  What a waste.  Of course, he could easily repair the damage done by the drug, but the psychical dependency on the drug isn’t so easily removed, it would require months of rehabilitation…
Suddenly, the primary door to the circular chamber slid gracefully open, and the familiar, yet still disturbing gait of the robotic Guards stepped in, preceding the Regent’s only son, Noah Solaris.
With his royal blue cape flowing, he strolled up to the physician-major.
“Good day, young master.  How may I be of assistance?” He said, bowing his head just enough for his lengthy white beard to drupe.
“Good day to you, Physician-Major Alkaris. How is the girl I sent you?” The young man asked. If any concern in laid in his soul, his features did not betray it.
Alkaris bent over his exceedingly complex set of instruments, then returned his gaze to the awaiting Noah.
“I have stabilized her vital signs, the nanobots have already begun the reconstruction of her heart and liver…I expect it to be completed with in the hour.”
Noah beheld the girl whose life he had save with a seemingly random act of will.  He had been returning from his mother’s sanctuary in the Nareo Hills when his escort happened upon the girl, unconscious and bleeding. Maybe it was honor, maybe it was compassion, but never had anyone used such words to describe the spoiled offspring of the Regent.  Noah guessed it really didn’t matter what compelled him to bid his escort to carry her with them, back to the Palace…
“If I may inquire, as to what you have planned for this girl after treatment has been completed?” Alkaris said, interrupting his self-reflection.
“No… I mean…No, I’m really not sure...”  Noah paused, thinking of all those lectures his mother had given him on responsibly to his duty, to his people.  Though, he usually just pretended to be paying attention…but apparently he had paid more than he thought.
Alkaris’ cybernetic eyes narrowed quizzically.  “Of course, I can house her here until you…make up your mind?”
“Yes, that is acceptable, I—“
“The Regent summons you, master Noah.” A Guardbot mumbled in a harshly synthetic male voice.
“Whatever could my father want?” Noah asked rhetorical.

A second treat today! Sure am glad I decided to put off work (hehe) and spend some time in the poor, forgotten Prose forum!

Sci-fi it is! And a good start. You have the beginnings of some well rounded characters, and I'm interested to see where the story takes them.

A good sign!

hehe, I liked it, a lot, not really sci-fi though, when you said sci-fi I was expecting...little green munchkins with purple eyes and a blue tongue...mind you...I haven't read your latest installment :P

No, seriously, it was good...could you be in fear of turning into a true romantic at heart?  I feel romance blooming between the self-indulgent Prince and the mysterious girl who he felt compelled to save...it's truely romantic.  Upper-class guy saves lower-class girl and ends up falling in love, much to the disgust of his family and his people.
Can I also feel a fight brewing between father and son?
"He's a human!"
"But daddy I love him!"
*clears throat*  Sorry, I think I've been watching "The Little Mermaid" too much hehe.
Anywayz...yes...I think this is going places, big places...can I come to?  I can squeeze up real small and hide in your suitcase...
And I have to say that I'm proud of you for exploring the "romantic" side of life instead of going "ewww, that love stuff's gross" *sighs...typical boy*.
I just hope that one of them doesn't die or something stupid like that.

Well...must fly...I have the other part to read yet.
