When I was expecting our third child, I hoped that the baby would be a boy, having already had two girls.  Not wanting to be disappointed with my infant's sex, I kept telling myself it would probally be a girl and I should not be disappointed if it were. In those day it was very uncommon for the sex of the child to be known before birth.
My husband also longed to have a boy as having a son was something that was very important to him. Whenever he was in the mood, he always would say, "Let's have a Charlie." This had been his saying for many years, as he wished for a son name Charles after his own father. As my pregnancy drew to an end we discussed what we would call our child. My husband wasn't very excited about picking a girl's name, but I picked one out anyway just in case.
When the day finally arrived my sister took me to the hospital as my husband had just started a night job and needed his sleep. I was disappointed that he wasn't there with me but having had two other children and I was not afraid.
As I lay on the hospital bed watching the monitor count my baby heart beat, I though maybe it could possibly be a boy. The heart beat was in the low range and I had heard that girls hearts' beat faster than boys. Still I though to myself, "I'll love this baby no matter what sex it is."
Soon I was in the labor room in the final stage of labor, the doctor was there with gloved hands and masked face telling me to push. Finally after one last push he held a tiny red skinned baby, announcing the news, "It's a boy!".  I began to laugh as I had never laughed before. The laughter flowed from my whole being, like a raging river, I could not stop the flow of laughter. It was if a dam had burst and there was no controlling its swift forceful flow. My joy was uncontained!  The nurse laid my baby boy across my lap for a few minutes while I looked him over to see that he was perfect down to his little pink toes. I was still laughing, when the nurses placed him in a plastic bubble bag to keep him warm, and took him away to prepare him for the nursery.
When a nurse came with the papers to give him a name, He was already named in my heart, "Charles" our little "Charlie", a precious gift from God.
"Yesterday is never gone, if it left a memory."

Septsong:

This is a very touching story.  I was present at the births of both of my sons (ages 5 & 2) and can identify with your feelings of joy (I know, btw, that those feelings would have been just the same if "Charlie" turned out to be a "Charlie's Angel").

A wonderful story about the birth and your secret wishes of your son, although it is a little sad your husband found his sleep more important than the birth of his third child. Enjoyed this much !

Thanks for all the replys, they meant alot to me. Munda my husband would have been there if he hadn't needed his sleep, he was a truck driver and if wouldn't have been safe on the road without the sleep. Anyway when he heard the news he replied to my sister that, "that was the best news he had heard all year!" He and Charles were inseparable in life, closer than any father and son I have ever known.

Septsong, thank you for the additional information. It sure leaves me with a better feeling, although I have the feeling there's a lot more to your story than written down here. Either way, Beautiful memories !

I love this! Nothing like a true story to warm the heart, and it did, it truly did!

Thank you Irish Rose, I am glad it warmed your heart. Glad you all enjoyed it, and yes Munda there is more to the story but this is sufficient for the joy that it continues to bring to me in memories and the sharing of it with others. Life is precious, and taken too much for granted. If you love someone tell them for tomorrow you may not have the chance.

Septsong,
Nice story, keep it so Charlie can have a read of it when he learns to read.
Good luck
