"Here, sweetheart, let's sit over here near the edge of the ferry and watch the white caps splashing toward us!" Jack took his new bride and they held each other close. The air was crisp and bright, with a scent of honey tossed on wind, and the seaair filled their beings.

"Jack, you'll catch cold, please we can go inside until the crossing is over" Marilyn said with concern.

The ferry sounded it's horn and the other passengers gathered close to the doors for exiting. People were shoving a bit, and luggage was carried, sighs and children crying. Some were simply tired, yet there stood Jack and Marilyn on their own voyage of discovery.

Married only 2 weeks, here they were on their honeymoon. The world lay before them. A world of newness, where together they seemed totally wrapped up in each other's care and devotion.

Holding hands meant something special for Jack and Marilyn. For you see, theirs were weathered and wrinkled with age. Their faces held not the afterglow of most honeymoon couples, but many lines and eyes that weren't not quite as bright as some. Their posture bent, arms slow, and hearing a bit strained.

"Marilyn, I don't know what I would have done without you with she died"

"Nor I." she replied.

They had been friends for 30 years and recently widowed and now, at age 76 they were facing the rest of their lives together knowing probably more about each other than most do when wed.

The compassion and companionship and caring were evident between them. Once the ferry stopped, Jack reached over and kissed her on the forehead and said "well, my dear, here we are." He guarded her to the stairs and they slowly proceeded down and walked out onto the harbor near the ships hand in hand.

It's never too late for an adventure and no one has to be alone. When a friend turns into the anchor in your harbor, you have reached the port of love.

This is a beautiful reminder that love doesn't end at age 30. I especally love the last line. Great writing.

That was a most heart felt story!  I've seen this type of thing happen before.  It happened to my grandma, so it was a pleasent reminder.     Nice writing!

A touching episode unfolded here, Kathleen. I enjoyed reading. I suppose you enjoyed writing this as well...

Hey you, out there in the cold,
Getting lonely, getting old, can you feel me?
Hey you, standing in the aisle,
With itchy feet and fading smile, can you feel me?
Hey you, don't help them to bury the light.
Don't give in without a fight.
Hey you, out there on your own,
Sitting naked by the phone, would you touch me?
Hey you, with your ear against the wall,
Waiting for someone to call out, would you touch me?
Hey you, would you help me to carry the stone?
Open your heart, I'm coming home....
