He was my uncle, I thought he'd always be.  Perhaps he isn't the man I thought he was.  Perhaps he was different.  My uncle would not put you through the torture that I have gone through.  And what was all of this for?  Nothing… it was all for nothing.

About eight years ago my nightmare began.  On that warm summer day in June, my uncle got married.  At first, I was the happiest child you ever would meet.  I thought our family was done expanding, but here I was, about to be in my uncle's wedding.  And that wasn't all.  The lady he was to marry, she was wonderful.  She knew how to have a good time, she was funny, and she liked me.  Or so I thought…

On the day of the wedding, I was up extra early, just to get ready.  I remember we went to the church, and we rehearsed, and then the wedding took place.  It was short, but pretty.  From the reception on, my life was to change forever.  I was only seven, so I was naturally a little clingy.  I brought a present I had made up to her and gave it to her, thinking she would tell me how much she loved it.  It was a magnet I made out of plastic beads.  Instead of that response, she yelled at me and told me to go away.

With a tear stricken face, I ran to my mom.  She didn't think much of it, so I went to my new aunt's sister.  She was a nice woman, and she sat me down and calmed down, returning me to my hyper self.  She told me that most people on their wedding get a little tense from people telling them what to do.  I believed that, and that she would be better later.

She wasn't though.  Slowly, she grew to hate me, and my uncle changed too.  Perhaps three years after they got married, they moved back to Minnesota.  They moved in with my grandparents.  I was so excited.  They had lived half way across the country, and now they weren't too far from me.

My excitement wasn't long lived though.  Slowly, family problems grew into heightened fights.  My grandparents ended up selling their farm to them.  My aunt secluded herself and my uncle from the rest of the world.  They grew distant from us.

My biggest blow came shortly there after.  My dad became a bit upset about something or another, and asked my uncle a simple question.  He was looking for an answer, but didn't get one.  From that day on, we weren't welcome at his house, we weren't welcome anywhere near their house, and my aunt hated me with a passion.  I was caught in the middle of a fight, and it was tearing me apart inside.

Shortly after he moved there, they adopted a little girl.  I loved her from the first moment I'd seen her.  She was a beautiful child, and never cried.  She was the only link between our families.

The last bomb went off two years later.  My uncle moved back to Washington.  I don't fully understand why, but I know it wasn't just for the simple reason of a better job.  Instead of selling the farm to someone in our family, he sold it for the highest bidder at an auction, and then left.

I haven't seen my uncle in roughly four years.  My dad and my uncle haven't spoken at all in that time period.  And here I am, still caught in the middle.

One thing, though, that I have learned is to treasure your family and friends.  Don't be afraid to love them for who they are, and don't let a simple conflict destroy a family tie.  In the end, family is one of the most important things in your life.

Note:  I'm not too great at non-fiction, so if there is any confusion, I appologize.     I made contact with my uncle last June, and have slowly begun to mend some of the differences.  It's not easy, but I've grown to realize that one person can make a difference.

Hey cassandra,
A lesson to learn. Yeah, i learned that. i have not spoken to my mother for three years (since the birth of my kid) but we made contact a week ago. It is hard, but we are trying to pick up the pieces!
I loved reading this.

How heart breaking it must be for you. I understand the toll a broke family can have on one. {{{HUGS}}}.

Extremely powerful Cassie.  I knew a little about this, but had no idea how involved it was.  Keep on being the strong one, keep on trying and I do believe that you have the power in your heart to bring your family back together.

Hey Cassie, that is so sad. {{{Hug}}} I know that you can be the one to bring your family back together. If you need any help, I'll be there.

 Luv ya

I remember hearing little snatches about this but never getting the full tale.  The rift may sound and look large, but with a heart like yours it can be bridged.  Keep your strength by your side Cassie

Wow.
I don't knwo how to respond here. That sounds so tough to have to go through. you're right, family is important, much more impotant than mere fights or differences. Hold onto them.
Thank you as well, for sharing.

powerful emotions here in your writing.
these family matters can get so out of hand so easily and go on for years and unfortunatly it is always the kids who suffer the most while the adults argue.
good luck to you.
take care,
