In the space between moments

Her soft azure eyes gazed upon the slowly thawing ground.  She glanced rather absentmindedly at
the rhythmic swaying of her simple skirt, instead being more enthralled by the tiny sprays of  grass
covering the ground.  The color was a ripened jade and had a jewel like quality.  The woman
thought to herself that all too often people miss out on the loveliness of simple things such as the
tender grass beneath her feet.

“Lorilan.....” the wind sighed, causing her to whirl around and search for the source of the
haunting voice.  Of course, she found none.  A little uneasy, Lorilan swept her mahogany tresses
from her tanned forehead and looked around once more.  With a disgruntled murmur, she
gathered what little belongings she possessed and began moving forward on the trail unwinding
before her.

Once more Lorilan let her mind gently wander.  She observed the glistening spring leaves
unfolding upon the limbs of a distant tree.  She concentrated on the caressing rays of early
evening sunshine.  She listened to the melodic hum of a slowly curling creek.  The calmly
beautiful woman did everything in her power to fight off her pain infused memories.

...Come to me and I shall be your destiny...

The words echoed within the deepest, most private recesses of her mind.  And after all she
had been through, they still held a lustful appeal.  Just as the image of his cobalt eyes and his
lightly mused hair did.  A part of her still wanted to trace the curve of this lips with her index
finger and become wrapped within his seductive embrace.

With a shake of her wavy hair, Lorilan pushed the thought aside.  She doubted she could
ever have what once was.  Not with Aidan nor with any man.  So, she trudged forward, making a
journey that had no destination physically, but a significant destination in her heart.
*******
Wings.  A masterful array of soft feathery masses, tangling, enfolding, floating with a
silent dignity.  The sky was completely masked by the massive expanse of silvery-white.  Lorilan
was entranced by the wondrous show.  Among the cloak of silken feathers, she heard his voice
once again.
...Dream with me and I shall be your destiny...

Suddenly he was there, lounging upon the mass of white covering the periwinkle skies.
His own pearly wings blended perfectly with the others and his strong, well sculpted body was
utter perfection.  Lorilan’s entire being yearned to be with him.  As soon as the thought surfaced
within her mind, he lowered himself beside her and placed his lips upon her trembling cheek.

“Ah, sweet Lorilan...it has been much too long.”  His voice pulsed within her ears.
“Aidan...leave me.  Leave me now.  I cannot handle the torture you bring my soul.”
Lorilan responded, her eyes filling with bitter tears.

“Do you really want me to leave?  Did you ever really want me to leave?  No, you did
not.” Aidan asked and then answered his own question.  Lorilan hung her head, only glancing up
when she noticed the mass of white feathers fluttering gently.  They seemed to sway with the
beating of her screaming heart.  They seemed to know that her spirit was squirming and twisting
within her.

“I loved you.  And it’s true, I love you still.  But I cannot live my life waiting for our next
embrace when that embrace may never come.”  Lorilan said, anger beginning to blossom in her
sweetened alto voice.

Aidan stood there a moment, letting the impact of her words slowly sink in.  His dark
cobalt eyes looked thoughtful, almost sad.  Lorilan picked up on the hint of human compassion
within his immortal eyes.  Her anguished face softened a bit.

“Aidan, leave me to my dreams now, I beg of you.” She said once more.  This time Aidan
agreed.   He lowered his head and drew close to her, so close that his dark locks touched her
forehead.

“May I kiss you, sweet Lorilan?”  He inquired gently.  Lorilan trembled in uncertain
delight and slowly nodded.  With a smile hinting upon his face, he lowered his face next to hers
and their lips met tenderly.
******
Lorilan awoke as the early morning rays brushed against the curve of her sleepy limbs.
The dream of Aidan had been so real that the image of the white feathers, the blue sky, and his
stunning face frightened her a bit.  She tried desperately to shake off his presence as she gathered
some of the abundant wildberries for her breakfast.  She consumed the lush fruit silently, letting
the bittersweet juices roll upon her tongue as she became lost within her thoughts.

After she had eaten, Lorilan picked up her small tattered bag and continued heading east.
As she walked on, the trees which had been sparse began appearing with more and more
frequency.  The rolling hills, the tanned arms of the forest, it was all familiar to her.  She was
growing near to the place where she and Aidan first met, when Lorilan had no idea as to who or
what the handsome creature was.  It was like returning home...but after being gone so long, one
can never really return home.

After walking several more miles through the dense underbrush of the wilderness, Lorilan
stopped abruptly.

“There.” She whispered, seeming to talk to the forest itself.  Lorilan gazed in quiet awe of
the bubbling stream flowing among the olive ferns of the forest floor.  This was the place that
Aidan had first come across the young Lorilan.

Lorilan remembered it like it was yesterday.  She remembered the way he sauntered up to
her, the way his scantily clothed body glistened in the mid afternoon sunshine.  His mischievous
smile still echoed within her mind.  He had asked her about herself and she gave off the usual
ramble, telling that she was an orphan child, outcast by her village who disliked her family when
they had been living.
He had been so gentle with her.  He looked at her in a way that no other ever had...with
caring, compassion and lust all rolled into one.  Those first days had been a whirlwind of
excitement, of discovery.  She learned that he was a wandering bard, a poet who had been cast
aside by the world.  Lorilan did not discover that this was a lie for quite sometime.  Those first
weeks were innocent, filled with a timid, get growing love for one another.

Things did not grow rocky until one cool autumn evening.
“Aidan, love!” Lorilan shouted to the body silhouetted upon the gold framed horizon.  The
moment he heard her voice, he came running with astonishing speed into her awaiting arms.  His
lips met hers passionately and they lowered to the dew moistened ground.

The kisses grew deeper, more sultry, more demanding.  The feverish devotion was new to
Lorilan, but she accepted it readily.  Upon hearing a soft rustle somewhere nearby, Lorilan opened
her eyes and pulled gently away from Aidan.  She was shocked by what she saw.

Marvelous wings protruded from Aidan’s back, stretching out above him and shimmering
with a pearly glow.  Lorilan gasped and Aidan quickly jumped to his feet, obviously unsure of
what to say.

“Wh...what are you?” Lorilan asked, her voice shaky with utter amazement.
“An angel, love.  Or was, rather.”  Aidan responded.  As he spoke, the light within his
cobalt eyes began fading to a darkened hue.  This alarmed Lorilan a bit, but she did not turn away
from him.
“Was?” She inquired.

“I’m not what I once was, for reasons you would never understand if I told you.  But
that’s not important.  What’s important is that I’ve given everything to be here with you.  Come
to me Lorilan, and I will be your destiny.  And that’s all that matters.”  Aidan replied.  There was
something different about him besides the outstanding wings he now possessed.  A slight coldness
had entered his normally warmth filled features.  Lorilan looked uneasily at him, but took his hand
when he offered it.  She could not have possibly known what his destiny held in store for her.
******
Another flood of bitter, angry teardrops slid across Lorilan’s face as she ripped herself
from the misty images of what once was.  She threw her head back and forced a long, piercing
howl out of the depths of her and into the cooling air.  The sheer volume of her scream sent all
other sound in the forest to a screeching halt.  Lorilan stood there a moment longer, now letting
the crisp air wash her mind clear of her memories.

“Oh Aidan...look what you have done to me.  You have killed me.” Lorilan spoke softly,
appearing shocked by the truth sounding within her words.  “I am bitter, broken, unable to love.
Your destiny was my undoing.”
...You could not accept my destiny...

Lorilan whirled around, nearly falling into the streaming water a few feet from her.  She
saw nothing but the emerald leaves rustling gently among threads of pale light.
“Wh..who’s...there...?” Lorilan asked, her words shaky and vulnerable.  Still she saw
nothing.  Terrified, Lorilan began to sprint across the crackling underbrush, moving faster than
thoughts carried by stormy winds.

...Lorilan, do not run from me...I will not hurt you, love...

She stopped dead in her tracks.  Her deep green eyes flashed and the breeze flirted with
her mahogany hair.
“Aidan!  Show yourself!” She demanded, shouting to the silent heavens.
“I’m here my love.  Not in your dreams anymore...I won’t do that to you.  I’m here, flesh
and blood.” Aidan spoke gently, appearing in a luminescent shimmer of lavender.  Lorilan gasped,
stunned by his beauty once more.  Her heart fluttered in her rising and falling chest and she
wondered for a moment what it would be like to kiss his lips once more.

“Say the word, Lorilan, and you can have me again.” Aidan said, obviously reading her
thoughts.
“Never, Aidan.  I can’t let myself love you when any moment that love could be ripped
from me.”  Lorilan responded, a coldness bringing a bluish tint to her green eyes.  Aidan sighed
and looked around the lightly humming forest a moment, lost in his thoughts.
“Lorilan, what is so wrong about my destiny?  Why can you not share it with me?” Aidan
asked almost innocently.
These words sent Lorilan in to a fiery rage.  She stared at him in disbelief for a moment,
utterly amazed at his apathy.
“How could I ever share your destiny, Aidan?!  You have sold your soul and become a
murderer!  I knew from the moment that I saw you kill that lovely young child that I could not be
with such a person, let alone help you with such horrid deeds!” Lorilan shouted, her words
stabbing the air with a shrill sound.
“I do what I have to do to survive, Lorilan.  God abandoned me because I was not faithful
to him.  I had no choice but to sell myself to darkness and do it’s bidding.  Besides, what I do is
only the killing of mortal shells, not of souls.  Souls are the true essence of every being, wether
animal or human or angel.” Aidan responded, lowering his voice to nothing more than a floating
whisper.

“You may not kill souls, but you don’t have to.  You know full well what is going to
happen when you turn them over to that demon who owns you.  I would never do what you do.  I
would condemn myself to an eternity of torture before I would inflict such pain upon another
being.” Lorilan spat her response at Aidan, growing more angry with every passing second.
Aidan did not respond, but rather turned his back and began to walk away.

“You turn your back on all that’s good, Aidan.  God did not turn his back on you.  He
never has.  You turned your back on him. And I have never abandoned you.  It was you who took
your love from me when I would not live in the blackness with you.” Lorilan whispered softly,
knowing he heard her every word.  Aidan stopped, but did not turn to face her.
“You’ve let the universe corrupt you and lead you away from love.  I will not deny that I
have not done the same, however.  Because I have.  I recognize that now.  You can still come
back to love, Aidan.  It is not too late.” Lorilan added.  These words caused Aidan to turn around
and look at Lorilan.  He noticed the sadness within her emerald eyes, the honesty present within
them.

“Can one ever really return home though, Lorilan?  Can things ever be as they were?”
Aidan asked, not with bitterness, but with sorrowful yearning.
“We will never know unless we try, Aidan.” Lorilan responded gently, offering a quiet
smile.

Great story Krista!  Evocative, emotional writing from start to finish.  The theme of love gone bad and pain of the soul climaxing into Lorilan's forgiveness and the (possible) redemption of Aidan was great!

Again I repeat what I've always believed, you are a great writer, and we definetly need to see more of you in Prose

Well now, look what we have here!

LOL! just teasing. I think over all this holds great potential! You've created quite an interesting story here with her fallig in love with a "fallen" angel. The underlying implications are many and lend a great deal of versimilitude to the whole story. I liked how you had her "bouncing" back and forth, though I would have liked to see a little more definition between the two as it did get a little confusing! But I loved it in general!

You have too much talent! This is a really good story. What's with you and cobalt eyes? Seems like every guy you write has cobalt eyes. I also agree with Abe that you need to write in porse more often.

 Luv ya
