The Unicorn

Once, in a time long forgotten, there lived a utopian land filled with peace and beauty.  It was called Alatan.  Here, there lived many different races, from the quiet Elf, to the vocal birds of the forest.  Aside from all these creatures, one race stood apart.  It was the Unicorn.

The Unicorn was respect among all the races, was gentle and kind, and loved by all.  They had no enemies but one.  It was the newly emerging race of man.  They had not lived in the world through the great wars, and known the sacrifice that all unicorns had given to ensure the safety of the beings within the world.  They did not realize what the Unicorns stood for, nor what they were.  All these men knew of the Unicorn was that they were beautiful, and their horns were worth a lot.

This was a dangerous time for the Unicorns of the world.  The primitive race of men were emerging in greater numbers everyday, hunting their race.  The numbers were dwindling down in size.  Slowly, the humans were taking over the land that they had inhabited for generations.  Everything was becoming lost, and would become lost for good if something did not change soon.

There was a prophecy among all the races, from years past, about the one that would restore peace to the land.  She would lead the races in a fight for peace, a fight for freedom, and above all, a fight for life.  They simply called her Iathria.  The name meant, "star from the heavens" in their ancient language.  The prophecy didn't say how She would save her people, but only that she would do it.  It said she would save her people, but the time to act was drawing shorter at the set of the sun each day.

Deep in the forest, the savior was there.  She was the most beautiful creature there ever was.  Her creamy white skin looked like the clouds floating above.  Her mane blew in the wind, glistening like a shimmering waterfall, and her eyes shown black as night. She was living in alone.  In hiding, she lived in a cave behind a waterfall.  She had heard the legend many times.  She knew it by heart by this time, and she knew that the savior was she.  Iathria alone knew what it would take to restore peace to her people.  She also knew the sacrifices.  Each person, whether good or bad, deserved the chance to live.  Her heart was filled with love, her mind filled with determination, and her emotions prepared for the journey ahead.  Slowly, she left her cave, and set out to do what she must do.

Each Unicorn, when they come into being, is born with a specific power.  Each power is slightly different from the other, but needed greatly by all.  Iathria's power was that of love.  Without love in the lands, there would never be any peace.  With love, she could do anything.

Throughout the seasons, the people and the beings of the land heard of her.  Her heart was so big that nothing could overcome it.  She spread her message to all.  All that would listen heard her beliefs.

"I dream of a world in peace.
Everyone deserves the chance they are born to take
To live together is to live as one.
One civilization under the heavenly stars.
Nothing happens without purpose
No purpose goes without meaning
The meaning of life is to live as one
To live in peace."

Her words were heard, and believed.  Man began to realize their mistakes, and began to change.  They began to change because of the courage of one Unicorn.  One Unicorn with the courage of a hero, the heart of a princess, and the determination of a legend come to life.

Authors Note:  I wrote this story, and am dedicating it to a very special friend.  She has been there for me when I've needed her most, and I just wanted to show her how wonderful she truly is.  I don't know where I'd be now if it wasn't for her.  Krista, you're the best.

Excellent story. Next to Dragons, unicorns are my favorite!

*near tears*  Cassers, you're truly the best. You've saved me so many times lately.  When no one else was really there, and I mean no one, you were.  I love ya so much my friend. You mean the world to me.     Thank you.

Brilliance is the only befitting word here.

Extremely vivid.

Take each day as it comes,
Consider each day as a flight,
Try hard to succeed and fly,
Surely then you will reach some height.

But if by some chance you don’t,
Remember that tomorrow will always come.
Learn this well and learn this hard
That today’s efforts will pay for tomorrow’s fun.
