April 20th 2000

Lord, he thought he loved her. Jason was on his way to see her yet again. Every night after work for the past several months they had been meeting. Tioni. What a beautiful name. She was the most prefect girl he had every met. Small, almost fragile, but with a will of steel. She just barely reached his shoulder. Strawberry blonde hair and emerald green eyes. Just watching her walk as a study of pure poetry in motion. More of a glide than a walk. Always graceful.

He had met her one night on his way home from work. He was daydreaming as usual when he heard soft crying. On investigation he found her sitting beneath the old willow tree, hands and face smudge with dirt and tear tracks running down her face. It was love at first site for him. He remembered handing her a tissue and sitting down next to her. She was shy and quiet at first. Slowly she opened up to him.

Her home life was awful. An abusive Father , her mother died early in her life and a drug using older brother. She said she often stayed out late to avoid the abuse. From the start he wanted to take her from all the pain. She struck a cord deep inside of him. He wanted to protect her, defend her. Tioni didn’t want him hurt, as she put it and refused to let him walk her home or even tell him her phone number. So each and ever night he met her in their private spot.

OH he had tried to follow her, but she took a winding path and he lost site of her. Apparently they lived far off on the back roads, and where not well known or liked by their neighbors. He had asked around town about the family. All he learned was that they where trouble and to stay far away from them. Even his parents wanted him to leave her alone. They didn’t understand. She was his world. And tonight he was taking her home with him.

He approached the gate. He could see the willow tree from the walk way. At first he didn’t see Tioni, but then she was there. Seeing her standing there was like a burst of sunshine for him. He felt the tingle from his head to his toes. If any of the guys at school or work heard about this they’d laugh and tease him for months. But what did they know of love? This all consuming feeling, of needing her, wanting her.

Tioni ran to the end of the walk way and waited for him, a radiant smile wreathed her face. Her hands out stretched to greet him. “I was afraid you wouldn’t come to see me tonight” Tears sparkled in her lovely eyes. “ I’ll always come for you” He said as he took her in his arms. Even her kisses where heaven, electric with a hint of the forbidden.

Taking her hand they walked to their tree and sat down. He told her how his day had been. Work long and tedious school even worse. His school had recently install metal detectors at all the doors. You couldn’t even get in without showing your key’s and cigarette lighter.  Here has was almost ready to graduate and he couldn’t even be trusted to walk into school. He went to a different school then Tioni so he didn’t see her until he finished work.

He noted a fresh bruise on her face. “How did this happen?” She tried to hide her face, but that made it all the more noticeable. He was furious!! This time he’d take care of it himself! “ I fell and hit my face on the desk at school. Really Jason!! He didn’t touch me. I swear it!” He gathered her in his arms and held her tight. Kissing her brow, rubbing her back. “So tell me about school today.” She felt cool in his arms, the nights where getting warmer, but it was still chilly out. He wrapped his jacket around her shoulders, resting her head on his shoulder.

“Oh it was the same as always...boring!” They laughed and talked the evening away. They heard the church bell in the town center ringing in midnight. “ Jason, I have to go now.” “ No! Stay with me. Come home with me. Tioni, I wanted to wait to ask this, but well I love you! Come stay with me and my family. Mom and Dad will help keep your family away. You’ll never be hurt again. I promise. We can be married as soon as we graduate.”

Tioni pulled away. “Jason, I do love you, but it can’t be. I have other things that I must do. I can’t go with you.” Tears ran down her cheeks. She held him tightly to her. Then with a kiss she ran off. He followed, he almost lost her then he caught a glimpse of her ahead. She was zig-zagging through the headstones. Suddenly she disappeared.

He wandered around to the last place he’d seen her. A beautiful angel headstone. He sat down by the headstone. Why wouldn’t she go with him? She said she loved him too. He just didn’t understand. Was she that frightened of her Father and Brother?  He could and would protect her. They’d go far away. Somewhere no one would ever think to look for them. He’d keep her safe and love her for the rest of his days. Idly he traced the letters on the headstone. His body felt the chill, a deep down chill. “Tioni Baker:  1983-1999 Lost soul”

Deep and Touching.

Great work, Wolfsmate! I am moved.

Take each day as it comes,
Consider each day as a flight,
Try hard to succeed and fly,
Surely then you will reach some height.

But if by some chance you don’t,
Remember that tomorrow will always come.
Learn this well and learn this hard
That today’s efforts will pay for tomorrow’s fun.

Wonderful story.  It shows people a different perspective on life, and the lives of others.   Not everyone has a safe place to live.  Once, again, wonderful story.

Wolfsmate, this was impressive.
Great narrative ---had me hoping the
girl would be saved from her sad life.

A twist to the end ---makes this a great
short story
