Allison and Dan were perhaps one of the most unlikely friends of the entire high school.  Allison was a cheerleader for the football team, the student body president, captain of both the debate and math team.  She was also an “A” honor roll student with a 3.9 GPA.  Allison, by virtue of her outgoing personality, which would make most people feel comfortable around her, as well as her activities, was the most popular girl in school.  Everyone knew that she would be Valedictorian of the graduating class.

Then there was Dan.  Dan was a more reserved person.  Dan was on the debate team as well and he was a member of the jazz band.  Dan was a good student as well with a 3.9 GPA as well.  Dan didn’t have quite the following that Allison did.  In fact, Dan was pretty much an unknown in the school.  He didn’t have many friends, but the few he had were great ones.  One of his friends was Allison.  They lived across the street from each other.  They had been friends for as long as either could remember.

Dan and Allison were more than friends, they were best friends, almost like brother and sister.  Well, that was how it was until they hit high school.  Dan really liked Allison.  He liked her enough to ask her out on a date in his sophomore year.  She flatly said no.  Dan was discouraged, but didn’t give up.  About a month later he asked again.  Once again, he was turned down.  This continued on through their senior year.  Dan would ask Allison out every month, and she would say no.  They remained the best of friends throughout the whole ordeal, even with Dan’s slight discouragement.

This is not to say that there were not downsides to this situation.  The fact of the matter is that Allison trusted Dan so much that she would tell him about her recent dating endeavors.  This was extremely had for Dan to listen to, but somehow he managed to encourage the relationship that Allison was in every time.  Dan, on the other hand, didn’t date anyone during this period of time, thus compounding the effects of Allison’s dating.  But this didn’t seem to affect Dan.  He continued his tradition of asking her out every month, and being turned down.

Senior year rolled around, as well as the prom.  Dan, as was expected, asked Allison to the prom expecting to be turned down.  This time, Allison once again said no.  This didn’t phase him much, and he went about his business.  About a week later, Dan heard someone say that Allison had chosen her date for the prom.  With this, Dan’s heart sunk as he realized he would have no more chances with Allison.  Just then, Allison tapped him on the shoulder and asked him why he was so down.  He told her about the prom and his feeling of disappointment.  Then she explained who she had chosen and why.

“I would like to go to the prom with you, Dan.”  Allison said, “You have always been there for me and I can’t think of anyone more special to me to spend that night with.  What do you say?  Will you go to prom with me?”

Dan stared on with bewilderment for a moment before replying in a weak and startled voice, “Yes, of course I will.”

Allison decided that she would make all of the arrangements and that there would be no argument from Dan.  Dan wasn’t sure about it, but he went along with it anyway.  After all, he was finally getting his chance with Allison.

Finally, the big night came.  Allison picked Dan up at his house.  She wore the most beautiful dress that Dan had ever seen.  It was blue as the sky and soft as silk.  The dress flowed from top to bottom, where the most beautiful lace designs hung, inches from the floor.  The front of the dress was embroidered in dark blue thread in the design of a beautiful phoenix.  Dan was dressed in his best black suit with his favorite blue and white tie.

The night could not have gone any better.  Allison had every little detail planned just to Dan’s liking.  She had requested and dedicated Dan’s favorite song “Somewhere Out There” to him.  Allison had also taken the liberty of making reservations at Dan’s favorite restaurant, Mario’s.  She had ordered his favorite meal of fetuccini Alfredo and Caesar salad.  The night was perfect.  Conversation flowed like Allison’s dress, and emotions were free.  Unfortunately, the night did come to an end.  Dan and Allison shared a goodnight kiss on Dan’s doorstep.  This was the best day of both of their lives, that is, until their wedding day.

Maverick, please, please write more often!  You are a very talented writer, and everything you've written I've enjoyed.  I liked the happy, soothing nature of this piece, the smile it brought and the joyful ending.  Very much enjoyed, excellent piece
