He noticed the waitress was tired tonight. Kenny had been coming in to the restaurant for almost 2 weeks to watch her. He could not really get up the courage to talk to her, but he was trying. Every day they would talk a little more. He knew that she didn’t have a clue that he was watching her. He never stayed long and didn’t even try and flirt with her. He had seen her put men in their place for trying that.
“Would you like anything else tonight?” She asked as she came up from behind him. He jumped, startled.
“ Oh no thanks. That’s it.” He smiled at her. She smiled back and it made his whole day worth it.
“ You have a good night” She passed over her shoulder as she walked away. Kenny stopped to talk to some of the old timers that knew his father on his way out, eyeing the girl all the while. He said good bye and paid his bill. He never left a huge tip just a good one cause he didn’t want her to think later that he was trying to buy her in to dating him. With a last wave to the guys and a smile for the girl, he was on his way home to dream of her.

“ Hey Mary come here when you get a sec. I want to talk to you about something.” Don hollered to her as she passed him with her arms full of plates. The group of men that always came in were sweet old guys but they were very demanding.
“No Problem Don, be there in a few.” She called back. She hoped he was not going to complain about the food tonight. They always did but always came back. She finished serving the family their food and went back to Don’s table.
“What’s the problem tonight Don? “ she asked smiling. She really liked the old guys.
“ No problem dear, Just wanted to ask you some questions. Are you dating anyone right now?”
“Why Don if your wife just knew what you asked!” Mary pretended to be offended and got a laugh out of all the guys sitting there. She knew that he was just kidding her “ No, I am not seeing anyone right now, why do you ask?” she was wondering what he was up to. Goodness she hoped that they were not going to try and set her up with one of their sons!
“Well that guy you were serving over in the back booth? The one that talked to us. Do you know who I am talking about?"  Don asked
“ Yes the one that always comes in by himself and never talks.” At Don’s nod she said, “yes I know who you mean. He has been in here every night I have worked for the last 2 weeks. What about him? I have to get back to work before the boss takes my head off.” She joked with them.
“ Well I think you should talk to him a little more. Make an attempt to at least.” He advised.
“ Any reason Don? Or just because?” she was rapidly getting tired of the line of conversation here.
“ Well honey I know him and he does not like the food here that well. And he always is staring at you. He has a major crush. He is a very nice guy. I know his family. He is a good guy, he works and takes care of his family. Just the kind of guy you need in your life.” They all knew about her bad luck with her love life. They all teased her but what she didn’t know is that they were genuinely concerned for her.
“ Don your nuts. You better get that eyesight checked. Hey, I will be back in a few. My foods up.” She turned and left before he could say anymore.

Three hours later when her shift was over she finally got to think about what Don had said. She had also noticed the man that Don was talking about. She thought that he was very cute but a guy like that would never go out with a girl like her. A single mom that was a waitress just didn’t go out with guys like him.
“ Mary, hey!” Katie called to her waving her hand in front of her face. “ Where are you? In another world again?” Katie teased.
“ Yes wondering why I put up with you guys!” she sent back
“ I asked you if you wanted to go out with me and Bruce tonight.” Katie asked.
“ Oh thanks Hon but threes a crowd. Beside I am tired and need to get some sleep. You know Sara gets up early no matter what time I want to get up” she smiled at her friend. She knew that Katie thought that she didn’t get out enough but she never had the time. And she never wanted to be the extra person.
“ I am going home. See y’all tomorrow!” Mary called as she left.

As Mary got up in the morning she decided that she was going to try what Don suggested. Just for laughs.

About 6 that night he came in to get dinner. She was busy and didn’t see him at first. then almost fell when she came out of the kitchen and he was sitting right there.
“ Hi. Sorry I didn’t see you. What can I get you to drink.” She asked shyly. She couldn’t help but notice how wonderful his eyes were. He looked to be about 30. But he was handsome.
“ No problem. Just coffee. How are you tonight?” he asked. He kind of looked surprised that it slipped out of his mouth.
“ Very good, thanks!” she smiled at him and her heart started to race. “ How are you?”
“ Just wonderful.” Now, he added silently. She just made his day like always.
“ By the way what is your name? I see you almost every night and have no clue what to call you.” She asked bravely
“ It’s Kenny Allen. I know yours is Mary.” He smiled. He was thrilled. He couldn’t believe she was talking to him finally. The stars were in his favor tonight.
“ Its nice to meet you Kenny. Hey I will be right back for your order. Or are you getting your usual?”
“ The usual.” He replied. She could have brought him anything and he would have ate it at that point
“ Ok. No problem.” She turned to go back to work but not before giving him another smile.
About 10 minutes later she returned with his food. It was just what he wanted.
“ How did you know what I wanted?” he asked her incredulously
“ I pay attention to some people.” She called over her shoulder as she went back to work. She never had a chance to chat anymore with him that night. She was busy and never even really had a chance to think till about 11 that night.
“ Oh hey Mary some one left this for you earlier. I didn’t have a chance to get it too you.” Candy the hostess told her. It was a plain white piece of paper folded.
“ Hmm I wonder what this is. Thanks Candy.” She turned and started to walk away while opening the paper. She was in shock as she read it.

“  I would love to talk some more. If you care to I will be here at midnight to pick you up. I have a blue pickup and will be parked right where the employees park.
Kenny”
“Oh my goodness. I can’t believe it! KATIE!” she yelled to the other girl in the kitchen. She needed something to wear!

An hour later she was getting ready to walk out the door. Luckily Katie had a change of clothes in her car. She usually kept some in there just in case she wanted to go out after work.
“Well girl wish me luck. I will need it.” She said nervously to her friend.
“ Oh you will be fine. Just kick on that charm and you will be just fine.” She winked at Mary.
“ Alright, I will call you in the morning. Bye and thanks!

As she walked outside she was more then a little scared, not sure of why she was even going. She just had something pulling her towards him even though he was nothing like her. There was nothing that she could really tell was not like her but she just knew. She looked over to the place he said he would be and he was there. As she got closer he pushed open the passenger side door.
“ Hello.” She said shyly.
“ Hello I was not sure if you would come tonight, that was very rude of me" He answered smiling at her in the darkness.
“ I was very surprised.” She agreed “ but happy that you did” she added softly.
“ And I am glad you came.” He replied. “Now what would you like to do?”
“ Well I don’t really have anything in mind. Just nothing to active. I am very tired.” She said thoughtfully.
“ No problem. Would you like to get coffee somewhere?” he asked
“ That sounds great!” she answered happily.

She finally got home at 3 am. They had gone to a little out of the way place and had drank coffee for hours. Mary had enjoyed herself more then she ever had. He had asked her if she would mind if he called her in the morning. Her heart had leapt with happiness.  She went to her daughters’ room to make sure that everything was in order. Her babysitter was sleeping on the couch in the living room. The girl lived right across the hall and usually spent the night. Her mother was wonderful about the arrangement. She paid the girl well and she was a good sitter. Mary went to her room, changed and lied down. But sleep would not come this night. Her mind was to busy thinking of the wonderful man she had spent her evening with.  She had found out what she had guessed though. He was from a good family and never wanted for anything. By no means rich, but comfortable, very different from her. She struggled everyday just to pay bills and keep food on the table. She knew that she should give up on this before it ever started but she somehow couldn’t.
