In the space between moments

0 posted 2000-02-26 12:53 PM

The moon rose gently over the clouded horizon, it’s pearled beams silently weeping. The somber tendrils of light did almost nothing to break the muted shadows moving across the bleak landscape.  It seemed to me as if the darkness was almost a malevolent being, slowly drawing all light out of it’s victim, the softly slumbering earth.  Keeping my eyes fixed on the lunar orb suspended within the night, I slowly emerged from hiding.  A rush of icy air hit me as I stood up and brushed the dirt from my shivering body.

“So cold...” I muttered to myself.  I felt the odd sensation of the delicate hairs on my neck rising as I took a moment to fully observe the quiet landscape.  I saw the gently swaying trees, the rolling hills, and the soft light of civilization glowing a few miles in the distance.  But something
was different.  It took me a moment to realize it.  Yet somehow I could not place my finger on just what was so strange about the familiar sight.  Slightly confused and in a daze, I moved forward,  closer to the pale circle of light positioned high in the dark cloak of night.

After walking several yards, I felt something wet caress the bottoms of my bare and tattered feet.  Assuming it was just dew collecting on the clumped grass, I continued to aimlessly move throughout the silent valley.  Never had I felt so entirely alone as when I walked upon that land.  The eerie silence frightened me a bit, for usually the tiny creatures of night scurried about,
taking hold of the midnight hours.  So many days I had come here and listened to their soft rustlings.  I yearned more than anything at that moment to simply have things as they were.  But somehow I knew that things would never be simple again.  I could not remember why, but I knew in my heart that something catastrophic had occurred.  Shaking my head, I stopped a moment and tried to think clearly, but to no avail.

               **********
The time swept by slowly as I wondered exactly why I was roaming like a lost and abandoned child.  The wet sensation continued to bathe my feet and somehow I found comfort in the gentle slosh of the liquid.  My curiosity poked at me a bit, for I still found it odd that the entire valley seemed immersed in the fluid.  I was still not thinking clearly enough to investigate
however.  Instead, I moved over to a small grouping of trees a few yards away and laid up against a tree trunk to rest a while.  When I decided to pursue my aimless wandering once again, I moved away from the group of trees, stumbling upon an exposed root.  I was unable to hold my balance
and clumsily fell to the saturated ground.

I laid there in disbelief of my stupidity a few seconds, then slowly pulled myself back to my feet.  My entire body was now covered in the liquid that immersed the landscape.  I cursed under my breath and surveyed my body.  To my surprise, the fluid was dark and thick.
“What the..” I said, tipping my index finger into some of the liquid that splattered upon my forearm.  It was sticky.  Now growing rather frantic, I searched for a match within my pocket.  I found one quickly and tried to light it.  My fingers were shaking so badly that it took three or four
tries to finally set the match aflame.

I screamed once the amber light flooded in a small pool about me.  Blood.  I was certain of it.  It covered my alabaster limbs, my dark clothing, the whole entire valley.  I shrieked in disbelief and tried desperately to scrub the vile fluid off my body.  Suddenly I heard a low cackle
sound somewhere beyond the reaches of the feeble match light.
                 ********
With a slight shift in the air current, I knew he had arrived.
“Make it stop, you monster!” I cried, barely clinging to the shreds of sanity I still possessed.  He simply laughed harder, the sound piercing the depths of my fragile being.  I could smell the scent of his muscular body and almost feel the touch of his sooted wings upon my skin.

“I never thought it would come to this.  You’ve lost all of your light.  All of your grace.  You’re nothing but a horrid demon now, my love.  God did the right thing by expelling you.  I only wish you could see what you’re becoming...” I trailed off, knowing my words would infuriate him, but too weary to care.

I was all too right.  I saw his crimson eyes flash and then felt his icy grip upon my shoulders.  Although completely terrified, I held on to my composure.  Or whatever remained of it.

“I’m inside your mind now, you rotten wretch!  Every moment, asleep, awake, I will be with you.  You will never again feel the warmth of light nor the touch of love.  I will damn you to the same fate you damned me!”  He whispered, his voice cold and raspy.

“Ah, but you see, my dear, I have a weapon that you do not possess.  I still have hope.  I still have the capacity to love.  To believe that love will save me.”  I responded, keeping my words precise and effective.

They were indeed effective.  For a single second, I saw a flicker of compassion within his flaming eyes.  Sadly, it left as quickly as it came, being replaced by the same cold hatred that flooded them on the day that I abandoned him in favor of what was right.  Once I had loved him with my entire soul.  But I knew once he started falling into the blackness that I had to leave.  I
watched as an angel became the devils pawn, unable to do anything to save him.  Not even my love could bring him back to the glory of the light.

“That love will not save you!  Did it save me?  Did your love, did his love, did anyone’s love save me?!  No!  You all failed me!  I will have my revenge!” He shouted at me, his chilled hands closing about my neck.  I shrieked once, then slowly crumpled to the ground.
                 ******
The blood came in thick, rolling waves.  First lapping at my exposed toes, then slowly moving up my legs and up to my waist.  I tried to scream, but my voice no longer held any sound.   I tried to move, but my limbs no longer held movement.  I was helpless as the wave surged over me.  The fluid moved up my chest, then to my neck, finally flowing over my face.  I choked on the liquid, feeling the evil pour down into my raw soul.

“I told you I would have my revenge..” He whispered quietly, kissing my cheek with his stone lips.  I heard the flutter of his oily wings as he flew away, assured that I would stay trapped in my eternal prison.  I then cried, for the light had never abandoned me until then....

“Hold on my child.  You are mine and I will not let you fade away.  Your kin is coming for you.” A new voice whispered to me.  And with those few words, I knew that love was indeed my savior.  Not long after he had spoken, the rustling of silver wings touched my ears and the soft glow of my angels filled my vision.

Ahh, interesting Krista.. dark and mysterious.  A horror of blood and silence that holds an Angel and the of a Demon that once was not?  Enjoyed the story and the idea here.  Love was her saviour.. it certainly is.  Good read

I am not at all amazed that you can write prose as well as you can poetry..and you still maintain that wonderful sense of imagery here. Good job!
