Out of the darkness it came, fur rumpled and matted, limping ominously toward us. It's
teeth were bared and foam surrounded it lips as a growl erupted from it's throat. Janet,
Joseph and I huddled in the corner of the cave. We had no means of escape from this
creature advancing on us. I scanned the area trying to find some means of protecting my
friends and myself.

The cave was small and dark; it had no corner's and the surface of the rock face was
smooth and slippery. I could not see any place where we could climb for safety but there
had to be a means of escape. My heart pounded in my chest as I watched the creature
approach. Janet grasped my arm and stifled a scream into my shoulder. I knew this little
adventure of ours would end up in trouble. I felt it in my gut when we first set off from the
lake.  Now the three musketeer's were about to be..........

Now the three musketeers were about to be no more.  Brought down by the ripping teeth and powerful jaws of some slavering beast!  I always believed that we’d be able to grow old together to live our lives to a higher level than this, but at least we’d get the sole wan comfort of dying together.

“What am I thinking?”  I chide myself, I’m not going to die here and I’m certainly not going to let this beast get to my friends or me! Resolve hardening my eyes, I bend over to scoop up a smooth stone from the dusty cave floor, my eyes on the growling beast the entire time.

I squint my eyes in concentration, drew back my arm and then let fly the stone at the beast.  Only to have it snatched out of the air by a gloved hand.

A shadowy figure stood silhouetted by the dim light at the cave entrance with his hand resting on the now quiet beast’s shoulder.  He tossed the rock calmly up and down in his hand and spoke to us in a silky, commanding voice, “What do you think you’re doing?”

“Well sir,” I began before I was cut off by the mysterious stranger…

"I’ll tell you what you’re doing. First you trespass on my property, then you invade this cave, and wake up the beast in residence. Not only that, you also try to harm her," he said, his voice scolding them and getting harsher with every word. He dropped the stone and patted the beast on the neck, the beast then walked away.

My mouth would move but nothing would come out. Janet had a stunned look on her face, then Joseph stammered out, "W-w-we’re s-s-sorry."
"You should be, now follow me," he said as he walked towards the entrance of the cave. Once they were in the light again they could see the handsome face framed by long, silver hair. I could see Janet’s face stare in disbelief of what seemed to be a young masculine man but with the silver hair and intense blue eyes. He lead them to an archway. As we passed through the archway something seemed... different.....

As we passed the archway, something seemed..different...Instead of hills and trees outside, we walked into a huge castle lined with knight's statues and silver drapes hanging from the balcony. "Where are we?" Janet asked in wonder. "You are in my palace. I have brought you here because I have a mission for you." The man walked to a table and picked up a scroll...

p.s. short I know..but it's the best I could do!

"Since you are not afraid of the beast, you can do this for me." He looked at me. I couldn't look into those steel blue eyes..they were to penetrating. I looked at Janet and Joseph. They looked at me and nodded their heads. "What do you want us to do?"

They looked at me and nodded their heads. "What do you want us to do?"

“My name is Gammon and I have lived within this fortress for more years than I can remember. I am not allowed to roam into your world for I am cursed to grow old but remain young until the curse of the sorcerer Callenge is broken.”

Joseph took the scroll from Gammon’s hand and slowly unrolled it. The crackling noise attested to the age of the ancient parchment. The words were written in a language long dead to this world.

“There lives a man in a cave, similar to this one, in a land across the sea. He must receive this message if I am to be released from my hellish prison life. Callenge, the sorcerer foretold that this man would die before I would send this message. My challenge, to find someone who is not afraid of the beast that walks with me…. Someone who would take the ancient scroll to my successor and thus relieve me of my everlasting life.”

Tears formed in my eyes as Gammon told his tale. I was ready to fight the world for him! Before he turned, I caught a glimpse of something that chilled me. Could it have been a look of cunning and deceit? No. I decided it must have been a trick of light.  With one glance, Janet, Joseph and I decided to accept the task and seek out Gammon’s successor.  We questioned him for an hour before we knew where we would be headed.  He walked us to the edge of the cave and as we entered, we were again in our world.  Joseph held the scroll as we started on our journey.

Joseph held the scroll close to him as we stand in a tight-knit knot at the entrance to the cave.

"Well guys, what are we going to do about this?" I ask, trying to take command.

"Hmm.. I don't know," Joseph says as he stretches and yawns, "I'm tired though, maybe we should all go rest and then talk about this tomorrow."

"Good idea, Joseph, let's all meet back here at 1 o'clock tomorrow.  Sound good?"

Everyone nods there head in agreement and we all walk off to our respective homes.

When I reached my home, I headed straight for my room.  I quickly shed my clothes and fell asleep.

An iron tower climbs into the heavens before me.  Rending the sullen red of the sky with its inky blackness, as my eye climbs to the very top a yellow glow emanates from a single point in the tower, and I hear a hoarse laughter...

I wake up the next morning, and after a quick shower and a lunch that my mom said I wolfed down far to fast, I was out the door and on my way back to the park...

I was the first to arrive at the park. I took a seat on a stump by the entrance of the cave and opened the scroll. I was studying it when the others arrived. "Well, it looks like it isn't going to be a short journey." I spoke into the scroll. "We are going to need to prepare. We need food and clothes, money and supplies if we are going to do this." I looked up at my friends. "We have to decide if we are going to do this." I looked from one to the other. "If anyone wants to back out, now is the time."

I watched my friends as they considered my words. We did not know what was ahead of us and although this was an adventure of a life time, we had to think carefully.

Janet opened her mouth to speak, then reconsidered. My eyes were on her as she gathered her thoughts. "I don't know." She said...........

"I don't know" she said "I mean..Do we have to do this?" Janet looked at me. I didn't know what to say. I looked at Joseph and he shook his head. Janet shouldn't go I tought. "Well Janet," I said, "You don't have to go..Me and Joseph can go." Janet looked at me. "You think I'm going to let you go by yourself?" She started laughing. "I don't think so mister. Where you go, I go!" I looked at Joseph and smiled. I knew she'd say yes. He nodded his head and said "Well, I guess we'd better go tell Gammon we will do it." So we headed into the cave....

Upon entering the cave Gammon was already awaiting us and lead us through the archway into his strange and gloomy castle again. I noticed a sorrowful look in his eyes, as if he had no real confidence this evil curse could ever be broken.
We sort of stood their, not knowing what to expect next, so I stepped forward and said: "We’ll do it. We will make this journey and deliver the scroll to set you free at last."
Was it my imagination or did I see that look of cunning and deceit again ? I looked at Janet and Josh, but they just stood there with a look of complete innocence on their face. It must have been my imagination !
"I was hoping you’d say that", Gammon said, "so I took the liberty of preparing some things for you, such as food and extra clothing, to make your journey somewhat easier. Before you leave though, I’d like to give you some items of magic, which will help you in times of trouble.
For you Josh this sword and shield. The shield will protect you from magical attacks and the sword will be deadly for any enemy created by magic.
Janet, for you this mirror. It will give you the opportunity to have a glance of what lays ahead and contact me for  advise when you need it. Use it wisely though, because you never know who will try to intrude of mislead you.
Last but not least I have this wand for you Dave. I know it looks like an ordinary walking stick, but I assure you this is an object of great magic. You will learn more on how to use it during your travels. Listen to your inner voice carefully."
With bag and baggage, all ready to go, somewhat flustered by these gifts, we followed Gammon to another archway.  Now, looking back, I realize things happened as in a dream. We arrived on the other side of the archway without the opportunity of leaving a note to our parents.
We arrived in an old world where you could feel the magic all around you.  Our journey had begun.
