It was supposed to be a great day.  It was supposed to be the best day of Spring Break.  Sandy and her friends, Michael and Rick were getting together to play a nice game of golf.  As uneventful as that may sound, it was the most exciting thing for the threesome of friends who had not had the chance to relax and have a day off since the New Year’s holiday.

Sandy was probably the most excited about the gathering of the three.  She had been working so hard over the past term, that she felt she had alienated herself from all of her friends.  This would be her opportunity to show them that she still cared.  She set her alarm so she wouldn’t miss their 11:00 tee time.  The radio turned on at precisely 9:30.  Sandy sat up in bed and a big smile came across her face as she realized what day it was.  She jumped out of bed and hurried to get ready.

Michael was the joker of the group.  If there was something to be said, Michael never failed with his quick wit.  Michael got out of bed as the sun rose.  He was really into fitness.  After his routine of sit-ups, push-ups, and stretches, he hopped in the shower.  After his shower, he got his clubs ready and headed out the door to his car.  He glanced at his watch on the way out the door and thought to himself, “All right, half an hour to spare.”

Rick was the brain of the group.  He was double majoring in physics and chemistry.  He had a perfect 4.0 GPA and was the captain of the chess team.  Rick was up before his alarm went off.  He had been waiting for this day to come and was very excited.  He had a lot of friends, but always considered Michael and Sandy his best friends.  He too thought he had isolated himself amidst finals and essays.  Like Sandy, he thought this would be his opportunity to show his friends he still cared.

The threesome lived fairly close together and would have left around the same time to get to the golf course by 11:00.  This would have been true, except for Michael who left a half an hour early to stop by the local gift shop to pick up a gift for his friends.

Seeing as how they lived near each other, they all took the same route to the golf course.  On the way, Rick saw that he was following Sandy.  He looked around, but didn’t see Rick.  “That would have been too big of a coincidence,” he thought to himself.  Rick continued following Sandy until they got to an intersection near the golf course.  Sandy pulled over, so Rick did as well to make sure everything was all right.  As Sandy pulled over, Rick saw that there had been an accident in the intersection.  As he looked closer, he saw Michael’s car.  It was totaled.  Sandy and Rick rushed to the intersection to see if Michael was all right.  After explaining who they were, one of the medical workers informed the two that someone ran a red light and hit Michael as he crossed the intersection…Michael didn’t make it.  The medical worker walked them over to the curb where she showed them two packages.  She said that their names were on them.

Sandy and Rick were too shocked to even open the packages.  The next weeks were a blur, with the funeral and all.  They forgot about the packages.  One day, Sandy and Rick were talking and they remembered the packages.  They decided to open them to see what was important enough to Michael to leave a half an hour early to get.  With teary eyes, they opened the boxes and both found a plaque.  They both had a picture of the three of them on it with the words, “To the best times we’ve had, and the times to come.  You make life worth living.  Best friends forever.  Michael.”  With this, they both burst into tears.  They both realized that Michael lost his life because of something he felt was just as important.  To this day, these plaques remind Sandy and Rick of how important friendship is.  May this story do the same for you.

Wonderful story, Maverick, you have tears in these eyes.  Excellent writing and excellent moral.  Beautiful.

Definitely wonderful work.  It gave me a lot to think about, and a few stray tears also.

Excuse me, I need to get a tissue. There that is better. What a touching story. It makes me relize there is no time like the present to tell your love ones you care. Nice job

Beautifully sad Maverick.
Not often that someone can bring tears to my eyes, but this was so masterfully told and powerfully closed that it did.
May your friends live forever in your heart!
