How fortunate are those of us alive today? That is a question very few ever consider. Rarely will an individual even compare their life with those around them. When they do it is usually to compare themselves to those that are more fortunate or prosperous and only regard those below them as lazy or with even greater contempt.

Bearing that in mind, I must say that on some levels I am very fortunate. Despite my own suffering, I am alive where those who wanted life are dead. I have a 32-year track record to look back upon and ponder. The pain and misery of those years is nigh unbearable at times. Yet if I were to compare individual years to this past one I can only say that this past year has seen me fortunate indeed. I have made and have more friends now then in all those years combined. I have rediscovered a talent for writing that awes me still. I have discovered true love and the meaning of it. I have in my life and mind pillars of support now making my life bearable at worst and a pleasure at best.

I have been quick to place blame so to be fair I have considered where to place the credit for this. I cannot in honesty place it with myself, not entirely anyway. Passions seems to be the fulcrum of both the despair and fortune this year, it was there I found the friends I have now. It was also at Passions where I learned the true meaning of enmity and the total scope of jealousy. All knowledge is power.

I find myself truly fortunate in this; I have lived to see our country's Bicentennial, I have lived in two centuries, and most wondrous of all I will have lived during two millennia. No one yet to be born will be able to say they saw the 200th anniversary of our country's birth. Only my grandchildren will see two centuries pass. Not a single other individual will see another millennium for about 25 generations. Having the memories of those three events makes any individual truly fortunate. Those memories comprise the history my great-grandchildren will be learning and no matter what the degree every member of humanity contributes to the history we make each day. Because of that fact I would ask that all who read this piece give some reflection and thought to the history each has been a part of, has contributed to, and leaves for those to come. I would also ask that some thought be given to the enormity of the events we have all witnessed and shared in.

Peace be with you all this New Year and peace stay with you and yours throughout this last year of the twentieth century and the end of the second millennium since Christ. Peace stay with you after the beginning of the third millennium and beyond.

And peace be with you my friend. 'Tis truly a wonderful thing to look back and know that I was born in the 20th century and now live in the 21st! Thank you for causing me to take the time to consider how truly lucky I am, 'tis not something I think about too often.

Happy New Year my friend. And Happy New Year to the rest of you as well.

It is often said that history repeats itself. I think this is true in a lot of ways..we have the ability to learn from our history. We learn not to hate from hate crimes we've seen..we learn not to discriminate from incidents of discrimination..and so on.

Do we learn to forgive? Do we want our grandchildren to think back on the stories of our life and be proud of who we were.. what we did? I hope so...

The fortunes of history are not the gold and silver and gems...they are the love and forgiveness in our hearts.

You have been blessed this past year Scott. The richness of what you have found in 1999 will (I hope) last you a lifetime. As pDV stated, riches and wealth are not material things but friendship, forgiveness and the people we hold close in our lives. We here at Passions are extremely wealthy. The people are of highest quality.

Thankyou for asking me to reflect on the past and I have and I will continue. I am truely blest and I will continue to try to learn from the past.

The cycles of life are indeed a sight to behold.
I ,almost 30(yikes),have a new perspective from reading your message.
The 70's..thank goodness we got past thoses clothes and hair.
The 80's...another thank goodness to get past the daily bomb scare.
The 90's...watching new and strange technologies take hold while the youth of our country grow detached from the worth of life being less then sneakers or an experiment of living out movies and seeing what really happens when life is snuffed out by their hands
And now...my hope is that we relearn the ideas of diplomacy, humanity, civil responsibility...that the worth of feeling and life become more precious than materials... that honesty and integrity are held in each person... not because it is imposed by a religion or a job, or some outside responsibility...but because to live otherwise would not be justified in ones own mind.
Many will say I am crazy to state such hopes or dreams for the future. Some will say I am not realistic.
Wouldn't it be nice if it was realistic? If it was possible?  Once upon a time...it was!

I teach. And if each year, I reach one mind to see my dream possible...then I have truly succeeded.

And where two raging fires meet together, They do consume the thing that feeds their fury.
Shakespeare
