PainEater

Alone he stands, captivated and enraptured by his contemplation of self. Alone he stands enveloped and surrounded by the only unquestioning comfort he has ever known. Alone he is the strength upon which so many depend. Alone he will meet his end.

Bitterness lives within him. Bitterness nurtures his fertile mind. Bitterness is he weaned upon, suckling at the teat of deceit. Bitterness is his alternative to starvation. Bitterness is the birthright shoved down his throat. Bitterness breeds the ashes on his tongue.

Life offers no peace to his unquiet, uncanny mind. Life is the burden his cross forces him to bear. Life slaps his face with the goad and reward of death. Life is the sweetest of lies. Life savors the victory his honor denies.

These thoughts and more crowd into his empty mind. He has reached out into the Abyss and drawn back those who once stood on the brink of what he contemplates, not because they were worthy nor because they were friends but out of the simple human decency he has been long deprived of. In spite of the raging desire to watch as they are swallowed whole by the demon Despair, he has always grabbed hold of those hurtling past his shadows on their way to even greater Darkness.

Even the pain they inflict by their very touch betrays not what he knows is right. He saves them only to have them return to their heights in mockery of his sacrifice, though indeed they see it not. By choice they remember not the Dark they once plunged into, by choice is his saving hand forgotten. Yet even by choice does his hand catch hold of falling souls not bound for the Pit, but for redemption. Choice then is a child of contempt and self-sacrifice for it is no true sacrifice to live without the Light that has never graced his alien eyes. Choice then is it that saves from falling grace the impenitent souls Hell deems unworthy of release. Therein lies his only satisfaction.

No reward from ill-begotten life could compensate for the wrongs wrought upon him in Heaven's name, yet 'tis life that denies him the passing charm of well-earned surcease. A curse then does comprise the bulk of life's rewards for they needs must depend on the suffering of another. That does he see as his destiny for being born outside of fate has birthed him out of time. He absorbs misery from those lives he touches so they may feel joy instead and again does he remain behind, shunned for the very capacity they so desperately need.

Alone walks he through life and death devoid and empty.

Alone he remains.
Alone he endures.
Alone……………

I really enjoyed this one. It was excellently written, and it really made me think.

This does indeed suit my somber mood tonight my friend.  Well done.

How sad a thing to read on a night such as tonight. Wonderfully done however sad it may be.

I have "been there, done that."
This paints a vivid portrait of the solidarity one, (from my personal exp) can feel when in the depths of depression. Often it takes the view of "blaming the world."
Vividly portrayed and well written Scott!

Tis sad, I agree, but on the other hand think of the joy of hugs and smiles when eventually they are given and accepted...

Wow, i think this is brilliant, sad, dreadfully sad, but very well put together.  It reminds me of so much, its such a paradox being a pain eater, a thankless task, a sad task. Yes, its beautiful, thankyou.

Yes it's sad, but there is a good out put of being a pain eater Think about all the souls that have been saved, and the story was in good taste.

I will always know the importance of you.
My hugs and small kisses as well as you always having my ear are all that I can give to you, besides my friendship, for the kindness you have shown me in helping me through my fears of plunging into a that world so unknown to me.  My thanks will never be enough. {{}}*
