Be the Captain of your Soul

One thing I have learned is that we all have self-limiting beliefs. That we're not good enough, smart enough, pretty enough. We're unimportant, stupid, alone, and unworthy. Nobody likes us, trusts us, or believes in us. After much soul searching, I came to realize that the majority of the time, nobody put those thoughts in our heads. WE CAME TO THOSE CONCLUSIONS ON OUR OWN.

Self-limiting beliefs are formed in childhood. Think back to all those significant events in your life. The good and the bad. Remember the first time you rode a bike on your own? How'd you feel? Like you could fly! What about the time you were afraid to ask to go to the bathroom in kindergarten and you peed your pants? How'd you feel then? Stupid?

I listed all the major events of my life on paper. Some on my list: my mother's death, my cousin's death. When my mom died, I felt alone. When my cousin died, I felt like I was the angel of death. Nobody told me those things, made me believe them. Those were my own conclusions to the events in my life.

We all need to take accountability for the roles WE have played in our destiny. We all have the ability to choose our own path. Good or bad, right or wrong, we have no one to blame but ourselves. I take full accountability for the occurrences in my life. I realize the end of my marriage does not fall solely on my husband's shoulders. I played a part in its destruction. I am responsible for my success AND my failures.

There is something incredibly enlightening about taking accountability for my life. I am not a victim of circumstance, fate. I create my own results, whatever they may be. To quote a favorite poet, W.E. Henley: It matters not how strait the gate; how charged with punishments the scroll;
I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.

Excellent thoughts Tara! I still have many derogative beliefs about myself but I'm learning to accept more things and change my self image. Great piece, great thoughts.

Thanks for reading it, Dusk Treader. Sometimes it's hard to get past all the negative thoughts we carry around. I'm glad it's something you are working on.
