Before you read this, I must concur that this is not in my usual style of writing. Though it is not something I usually write about, I choose to write on this topic after an experience I had today. You must understand that I am not an adult, in fact, I am still in high school, so do not judge my writing on that.

I was standing outside a local business today. As I stood outside, catching a breath of air, I heard a loud crash behind me. I turned around to see what happened. It was a shopping cart that had been pushed into the side of the building and had overturned. The cart was empty, which struck me as slightly odd. I expected to see bags dumped across the sidewalk, but there were none. I understand that this might be an everyday occurrence, what struck me as extremely odd was the fact that it was a small boy who had done this. He couldn’t have been much older than five or six, but he had pushed this cart into the side of the building.

I know that this doesn’t sound like anything to write about, but it is the next event that took my notice. The young boy walked towards the entrance to the store. As he walked by me, I heard him talking about “how to be cool.” As the young boy explained to his friends, pushing that shopping cart into the wall was “cool.” As the young boy continued to say, “To be cool, you can’t do anything a girl would do. You have to be tough. Push things around, make a lot of noise. You gotta smash some stuff.”

I don’t exactly know how this young boy got these ideas in his head, but as far as I could tell, his buddies took this boy’s word as gospel. This is something you expect a teenager to be talking to his friends about, not a five or six year old boy. Society today is becoming more corrupt. The little kids in our society are not excluded from this corruption. We wonder how things like Columbine happen, but this incident leaves no doubt in my mind. Our society is becoming more corrupt, and it happens at an earlier age than ever. It’s hard to believe that a kid could say such things. I wouldn't have believed it, but then I heard it for myself. The corrupting of society.

I have to agree with you that society is becoming more corrupt.. It's a sad state of affairs these days. Nice piece MW.

I for one am heartened to see that you're paying attention to the world around you. It is only through noticing it that we can effect some changes!
