Small and frail, Angelica lay heavy on her pillow, her hair shining and gold like fine spun silk. Circles of sickness evident under her bright blue eyes. As she lay there she watched the twinkling of her very own Christmas tree. Her rocking horse ornament swaying ever so faintly, the teddy bear and ballerina all reminders of happier times. When she could run and play and laugh like other little girls her age.

Her Mommy never let her see her cry, her Mommy was always so strong and loving and gentle and kind. But she rarely smiled anymore, and lately Mommy had quit calling her Angel. She hurt from the lack of her pet name. Little knowing that her Mommy felt it too close to the sad truth to let cross her lips ever again.

Angelica lay there, eyes closed and made one Christmas wish, she wished for her Mommy to smile and laugh and be happy. Like she used to be before her only child got sick. Like before Daddy went away. Angelica prayed so hard that her fingers hurt from folding them so tight. Tomorrow was Christmas, and oh she'd been SO good! Maybe baby Jesus in his goodness would give her this one thing; a smile from Mommy, and her pet name Angel once more (and maybe even her Daddy back!).

Deep in the night somewhere between the North Star and daylight, an Angel smiled down from heaven as he guided a weary soldier home. Limping and battered the soldier slowly climbed the steps and knocked once, in that special way. Before he could blink or even breathe, the door was flung open, and two loving arms thrown around his neck.

And in between tears and kisses, she told him of their Angel baby. His heart nearly breaking, he went to her as fast as his broken frame could carry him. He knelt beside his only child, there on the nursery floor. Washing her cheeks with his tears, and touching her everywhere. Seeing how frail and small she'd become in a few short months.

There on his knees, humbled before a higher power, he begged God to spare his baby.
He argued that he had been spared in the battlefields of war, why should his innocent daughter be any different?

He soon slept, head resting by her side. And in his dreams he felt an Angel touch his skin, a feather light caress, almost imperceptible. Waking he found his Angel baby stroking his hand and saying ‘Daddy' in wonderment and surprise. As she mumbled about baby Jesus and her Christmas wish. He listened, and soon a smile broke out on his face. A smile unlike any he's ever known, as he knew, deep in his heart his Angel baby was still his to hold. His heart leapt in joy for he knew her Mommy would soon be smiling and laughing again too.

This piece moves me nearly to tears and, contrary to popular opinion, that is no mean feat.

'Tis a very well written piece and I look forward to reading more from you.
