The young man that ran off to call the ambulance was returning. Debbie could see him sprinting up the beach. He didn't look happy, either the run was killing him or it was bad news. Debbie hoped it wasn't the latter.
The young man jogged right up to Debbie, sweating, panting he said, "There are only two ambulances available in this little hick community. Both are out on calls, there could be a delay. Sorry. How is he?"
Debbie glanced over at him he seemed OK for now at least, he just had the look of something not right about him. He wasn't having any pains even. She couldn't explain it, but she knew he wasn't right. "He's not out of the woods yet," she replied to the handsome, blond haired, raised on the beach, young man. "I hope it get's here soon!" she said. The young man still panting and now doubled over as though he had a stitch, nodded his head vigourously. He too didn't like the look of the man.
"Debbie?"asked Edward, "It is time to tell you the truth." What truth? What was he talking about now? This was too freaky for words, it gave one the general feeling of unease, wariness to be precise. "It's time we talked about you and Beryl,"he said.
"I knew Beryl back in Tin Can Bay, back in the 60's. I saw her grow up, turn into a beautiful young lady and start dating. All the young men around town were pushing and fighting to get her to spend time with them. But she only had eyes for one. They courted and it was a beautiful, passion filled relationship. Everyone was jealous of the love, the bond, they shared".
Debbie's eyes were round as saucers. She didn't speak, didn't want to break the spell. This is what she always wanted to know about her biological Mum. Sure she had told Debbie some things, but nothing too personal and nothing like this. Edward was like the narrator for her mother's life story, a fascinating one at that. "Go on, please go on!" she said to Edward. "Tell me everything," she said, checking to see that Edward indeed looked happy and comfortable. "You feel ok for now?" she couldn't help but ask him. He smiled at her with a look of understanding, "Yes lass , I'm alright!"
The crowd that were around them earlier had moved off further down the beach. The handsome young blond fellow had gone with them. Debbie and Edward were sitting alone in their own little world, sharing a common linked past, her mother. As much as Debbie loved her biological Mum, they weren't close like Mother and Daughter, more like good friends or sisters. That was fine and understandable, after all 25 years with no contact, makes it hard. Besides Debbie's mother (in her heart and soul) was Dorothy the lady who adopted her. Dorothy and Ron were the best parents imaginable and were always there for Debbie in any and every way. Talking now to Edward, somehow lessened that gap, and made her mother seem more real, a young girl like herself.
Edward continued, "Now Beryl was only 16, and in those days girls weren't supposed to do anything out of wedlock. Not like today eh?" He winked at Debbie.
She smiled in return. "So Beryl's Dad kept a firm eye on her, knowing if they hadn't already consumated their love for each other, they soon would. Beryl's mother had died from a brain tumour when she was only 12. Did you know that?" he asked Debbie. "Yes she had told me some of this before Edward. It must have been hard on her with no Mum around at that age?" thought Debbie aloud. "It was, she was looking for love in a way, to make up for a lack of her mother's, it was sad really" said Edward. "Late 1966 her Dad, Frank, was at work and she was minding her little brother after school. She gave him some money and sent him down the shops to buy lollies. She was expecting your father that afternoon, and with Ray her little brother out of the way, well you can work out what happened!" he said with a cheeky grin. "It was her first time apparently and all she dreamed of. For her and her young man both it was a magical uniting of two souls. If only they were older, they would marry and begin a life together. She was 16, he 17." said Edward. He stopped and shifted around a bit on the sand trying to get more comfortable. Debbie noted he was starting to sweat again. There was a cool breeze now, sweeping along the beach, cooling all in it's path. She reached for the hair scrunchie on her wrist, and tied back her long golden hair. She was glad she thought to bring it with her. She said to Edward, "Then what happened to them?"
He looked far away in another place, or time, he was reliving Beryl's romance himself, which Debbie thought was kind of cute. Maybe he'd always secretly liked her or something? How come he knew so much anyway? Usually those personal details weren't known. "Were you her neighbour or something?" she asked him.
"How do you know so much about them?" she pondered. "I was there lassie, let's just say I was there." he responded still gazing out to sea, perhaps back to that day itself.

STAY TUNED FOR PART 4..

Alright girl! I am waiting for the conclusion of this. I already know where part of this is leading. One thing I want to know is...and I assume you already know my question because I know some history. Autobiographical?
