That place with padded walls and funny people in white.........

After grandma died, my mom called my uncles, who arrived with several of my cousins and aunts. We went into the basement, all but my uncle and Grandpa- Seeing Grandma carried out of the house would be too much for some of us.

We all sat, someone cracking a joke to ease the empty silence every now and then, forced laughter following from everyone but me. What was so funny, I wondered? Who cares about these stupid jokes- I didn't realize that everyone cared about her as much as I did, they just couldn't face the pain.

Then my uncle came downstairs, holding something in his palm. He came over to me- he had tears in his eyes. He was the last person I had ever in my life expected to see cry. He held out to me one of my grandmothers most prized possession, the guardian angel pin she had had for the longest time.

"Anne," he said, "Before grandma got too sick, she told me she wanted you to have this. Take good care of it."

"I will," I whispered, taking the pin. I meant it too.

**************************

For a long time I wore the pin. I wore it to the funeral. Through all the hard times, my dear friend Theresa brought home my books for me, and helped me keep up with school. She even gave me a treasured possesion from HER grandmother, a small Slovakian coin. It was a symbol of friendship. I promised to take care of it.

I treasured that as well. I kept it safely in my jewelry box, where I kept the pin when I wasn't wearing it. I used to take both of them out and look upon them before bed, vowing to keep both forever.

My word was as good as that of a heroin addict promising to get clean.
