The ship was a blaze! I pulled away from Anna's grasp running towards the shore. Screaming, try to get the attention of the crew rowing towards the boat. They were unaware of what was happening. Suddenly an explosion lit the sky. The fire had reached the power kegs in the hold. All I held dear, my life as it were was in flames. The screams and cries of agony could be heard coming from the ship. It seemed to last for hours, although I know that not to be true. It shall echo in my mind forever.

I felt broken, defeated, a man with no rope left to hold. I became aware of Anna's hands on my shoulders comforting me. Ah Anna. Thank God she was here. All that was left were the people on shore with me, Anna and her family and the nine passengers who had fallen ill. Thirteen, such an unlucky number. I felt the water lapping at my legs, trying to pull me towards my lost ship and crew. Behind me the rest watched as the ship sank from sight.

I railed to God…Why? Tears running down my face unheeded. Night had fallen, and the moon was full. The smell of burnt wood and flesh hung heavy on the air. Pulling myself together I joined the group on the beach. Something seemed different. No one but I seemed to notice our dire circumstances. They seemed almost joyful. Hands linked in unity, they began a chant, haunting, eerily so. At first I thought it was in memory of those lost souls, but then it changed. The group looked to John, as he led them in this ritual. All eyes turned towards me.

"So. You want to be a part of this family. Now is your chance. Join us." John said. Their faces had taken on an almost feverish cast, as if in a trance. I backed away, pulling Anna with me. " Come now. You know all about us. All it takes is a little blood to seal the bargain." It was then that I realized all he'd told me was true. " Come with us".

I grabbed Anna's hand and ran for the trees. I could hear them following us. John's maniacal laughter, following us relentlessly as we ran. Branches scraped our faces, and limbs threatened our escape. The tree's seemed to reach for us as if to halt our path, Evil lurking in the darkness, converging on us, the Moon pointing all to our direction. Slowly we made our way through the forest.

We came to a small, secluded pond. Steam rising into the cool night air, covered by the brush. We hid, our pursuers passing us by. We waited. A calm fell over us. I held Anna tightly in my arms. I needed to reassure myself that she was safe. I need her, her touch her scent. Our lips met in the darkness. Tongues and souls unite in love, in life. Her cool touches on my heated skin, calming, exciting, arousing. Soon our bodies entwined in loves dance. The pleasure of feeling her surrounds my senses, becoming one heart one soul one being. I fell asleep in her arms.

"All it takes is a little blood." I awoke with a start. Anna and the group surrounded me; I was staked to the ground. "Anna? Help me!" She smiled " Come with us my love." I stared at her in horror. NO! Not you! Please dear God not Anna. Oh please Lord help me! I struggled against my bonds. Fought with all my soul. They advance on me, swaying and chanting. Anna held my head on her lap, caressing my brow. I fought harder, to no avail.

Searing pain, I felt the knife cut. Felt my body become some other than it was ever meant to be. Changing, growing lighter yet stronger, my vision sharper, the taste of blood on my lips now appealing not unlike the sweetest ambrosia. Why? Why did I fight this for so long? I was empowered, all that I ever wanted was now mine. Anna was now mine! Forever, for all the times.

We have traveled many roads. We are amongst you, we always have been. Looking into our eyes and the world is there. Scoff not at want you think to be real. As All hallows eve approaches we rest. Our night is to come. The power and the glory will be ours. We are legion. We are here.

Succeeds the glory of the bowl -
An idle longing night and day
To dream my very life away
