“What are you doing here?” The hoarse voice startled me and brought me quickly out of my thoughts. I turned around abruptly to find myself looking directly into the vacant eyes of a total stranger. “Hasn’t anyone taught you better ‘en to be nosing around in something that ain’t none of your business? Maybe that’s a lesson I ought ta teach you.” Dark callused hands attached to a scruffy, blue, flannel shirtsleeve reached out roughly grasping my arm. I tried to move away, but was captured in their grip.
“Let me go!” I shouted and out of the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse of Teddy trying to see what or whom I was screaming at. As far as I could tell, the stranger had yet to see Teddy; I couldn’t let my eyes betray him. I turned my head towards the stranger for a better view. I took him in with my eyes. His ruddy, scared face was unshaven and rough baring a week or mores growth. He towered above me like a giant, much larger than my father who went about 6 feet in height did. His clothes were disheveled and his looks and the permeating smell both bore witness to the fact he hadn’t felt bath water on his skin for many a while. My eyes traveled down over muscular shoulders and caught at his waist; there stuffed into the waistband of his pants was a large, silver hunting knife. I froze in absolute terror at the sight of it. The realization of what had happened to Mrs. Perkin’s dog Ralph suddenly struck me sending a shiver down my spine.
“You’re one place you shouldn’t ‘ave been this time kid,” he said as he aggressively pulled me away from the boxcar and towards the dilapidated maintenance shed.
“Somebody help me!” I screamed. “Oh God, Teddy, please get help,” I thought to myself.
“Shut up! You hear me? If you know what’s good for you, you’ll shut up now!” Spittle flew from his mouth in angry spurts with his words as his hands increased the pressure of their grasp. “You should da stayed in school kid. What’s that saying? Be cool, stay in school? Don’t ya know skipping school can be dangerous for your health?” A maniac burst of laughter left his cracked lips causing me to shiver in their wake. He pulled me closer to him and grinned down at me exposing a mouth full of yellow, rotted teeth. Soured breath turned my stomach as it hit me full in the face."Yep, most certainly shoud 'ave stayed in school today."
“Don’t hurt me, “ I begged. I was so frightened I failed to notice the wetness on my jeans or the telltale dark stain as my bladder let loose.
“Ain’t gonna hurt one bit, don’t ya worry about that one. That dumb dog didn’t feel a thing either. A little bit of hamburg and it followed me right here. Now I’m gonna take care of you just like I took care of it.” Another burst of laughter spilled forth from his mouth.
