Well, this little excersize in flashbacks, narrative/point of view and a little soul and humor will quickly come to a close I think. The basic idea for this is much larger than a short story, I have realized, and I just don't have the time for it,so I want to do this little thing here a favor and end it soon. Most of the subject matter deserves more (except for the silly stuff). I was trying for a little trick between 1st and 3rd POV but I think I bit off more than I could chew. Oh well....

5. Florida and the Number of the Beast

Talahasee, Florida.
"Hey dad," Michael said, a little shaken at his dad's appearance.
"Michael?," he said.
"Who else? How are you?"
Hugging.
Two lonely years alone, for them both.
"Oh, fair I guess," his dad said, looking into his sons eyes, thinking that he wasn't taking very good care of himself. "How are you? How was the road?"
"Long and bumpy. Just like I like my I-10."
Laughs.
"You smell like smoke," his dad said, hoping for that cringe to appear on Michael's face. One day I'll get the message across, his dad thought.
"Yeah...," he cringed. "I need to quit."
"Good idea," his dad said. "Did you eat?"
"Not since breakfast," Michael said.
"Let's go out. All I have here is canned stuff and microwave food."
"You really need to eat better, dad."
"If I had the energy for the store,
I would. This damn oven is broken, anyway. Microwave works," he said, hoping Michael would laugh at that.
He didn't.

He had been driving around for an hour in town, forcing the 30 miles that he needed before stopping for lunch, and chainsmoking the entire time. His dad just asked him the night before if he was still smoking. First time he talked to him since the visit. Checking in to let him know he made it back.
He felt he was losing his mind with this number ordeal. At first it was interesting, then sort of creepy, then annoying, then creepy and annoying. Now, it was terrifying. He forgot all about the odometer, somehow, on most days. But when he happened to remember, he shot a glance down there, and BOOM! Another cigarette.
He was losing it, and he didn't seem to care anymore.
"Let it happen! I'm not afraid!", he yelled out.
As he pulled into the parking lot of a famous restaraunt, the odometer was almost at 666. He wanted a good, expensive meal, before whatever happened, actually happened.
Almost there. 100 feet to go.
There.
"@#$% YOU, BASTARD!", a man yelled out at Michael from a brand new Corvette.
Michael looked down just to be sure, a crazy look on his face.
666. Just a hair past it.
"YOU @#$%*#! I'LL HAVE YOU ARRESTED FOR THAT! GET THAT PIECE OF @#$% CAR OUT OF THAT SPOT! I SAW IT WAY BEFORE YOU DID!", the man yelled at the top of his lungs, unable to control himself. Spit flying out of his mouth.
To his horror, Michael realized who the man was.

It was Jerry Springer.

He laughed so hard on the way home he almost wrecked.
"That's it?"
He hadn't dared to go inside the restaraunt to eat. He would have choked to death from laughter.
Instead, he raised his hand to Jerry, grinning, and backed out, only to burst into laughter as he passed.
Jerry was not amused.
"O.K., O.K.," Michael said aloud, just before reaching his apartment, "I get it. The numbers mean absolutely nothing."
He was still laughing as he plopped down on the couch.
"They fixed the a.c.," he said to himself, "Son of a gun. It really is over."
Let's see, he thought, wanting to humor himself. What is the next signifigant number, just for kicks and giggles.
29,666.
How 'bout this, he thought.
2 for the second day.
9 for septmber.
999 for 1999.
29,999.

Uh......that is soon.
Nah...

Dragoness,
Thank you for keeping up. The last will probably be the next. Too much to handle for me right now. I thought it would be good excersize since I haven't done this in about 7 years or so. Glad you have enjoyed, though, very much so.

Tyson...smiles, I can see I haven't been keeping you occupied enough lately , but maybe if you're pouring out stuff like this when we can't be together, I should just sign up to work every night. It's great stuff and I can wait to see what's next.
Hugs
Ruth

Sorry but I will not be finishing this one. I just don't have the time right now and what I have posted may one day be part of something longer. I just can't finish it off just to finish it, when I know it's not done yet. Make sense? Hope so.
I just bit off more than I could chew for now. Take care.

Well I must admit to disappointment then Tyson. Please then, if you ever do decide o jump back on it, let us know. I hate it when I'm missing the last few pages of an interesting story!
