Sitting in Michael's Lap

0 posted 1999-09-27 11:21 PM

It was due in a week. The most important assignment he would ever complete in all his very long life, and he had no idea where to begin.

Nothing that he had thought about doing so far would attract the attention of the council; everything that could have been done HAD been done. There were no more angles to explore on anything ... no loose ends hanging that he might tie up neatly and thus make quick work of this, his coming-of-age project. As things stood, he had two choices: open an entirely new frontier, all by himself, or be ridiculed and exiled as a non-productive (and therefore worthless) member of society for designing an inferior project or, even worse, none at all.

This was simply not fair; so many others had been given free rides into this symbolic maturity, on the waves of another's success: picking up where those who had come before had left off and essentially completing a project that was not even of their own design. He laughed inwardly at his own bitterness; hadn't he spent the past month poring over the history files, praying to find such a "back door" of his own..? He chastised himself mentally for acting like the child that he would be considered forever if he didn't get this thing started.

A new frontier ... there was something both terrifying and exhilarating about it at the same time; the chance to do something that no one had ever thought of or attempted ... the implications allured him tauntingly while the sheer magnitude of the task threatened to overwhelm his self-imposed calm. I can do this, he forced himself to think, I am as good as any of them. Behind the serene mask of his face, uncertainty danced whirling circles inside his brain.

He had never felt so alone. While he longed for the companionship of his peers, he knew that he could never reveal his fears to any of them; they would denounce his difficulties as laziness even if they shared them. That was just the way things worked here; failure was not allowable, and therefore not discussed in polite company. Even as he reached this conclusion in his head, his heart knew that he needed a confidant, someone to be with him in this time of need -- to listen, to support, to understand.

He closed his eyes and imagined this keeper of his soul. As he listed off the qualities that this hypothetical companion should have, a picture began to take shape: he should look like me, he mused, so that I can always feel close to him, and him to me. He should be curious, caring, intelligent, thoughtful. And, he smiled as he thought it, above all, he should be the master of his own destiny. No one should be able to determine what he is worth but himself.

With his mental eye, he gazed fondly on this, his creation. Yes, he would make a fine companion; he, like no other, would understand what it was like to be alone in a crowd. But his thoughts would be his own, and he would hold his life in his hands. And that, he realized, would be the thing that set them both apart.

Smiling, the vision of his soul-child beckoning to him in his mind, he stepped into the darkness that was his workspace and began his work. As his thoughts extended into the void, shaping something from nothingness, he spoke his first words:

"Let there be light."

Yes, he remarked, as the vision of his companion smiled, it will be good.

Very interesting indeed!
I liked the similarities...and also that you left the reader the opportunity to determine who the character is, (god perhaps,)
Well done!
And I echo the welcome!
