Purgatorial Incarceration

Well, the first thing I must do here, is to apologize.
I proposed this particular challenge, as a curiosity at first, thinking I would have more than enough time to ponder on it before I was required to write about it.
Little did I know!
So imagine my surprise to find that it was the challenge for this week! Needless to say, I felt a bit under pressure. After all, if it was my request, how could I help but respond to the challenge?

So, I sat down and really began to think about the topic. The first thing I realized, as probably you did too, is that it really covers a lot of ambiguious territory.
First of all, what is magic?
Wow, now that in itself can be a whole other question.
So what I did, was look it up in the dictionary.

mag-ic\'ma-jik\n 1 a: the use of means (as charms or spells) believed to have supernatural power over natural forces b: magic rites or incantations 2 a: an extraordinary power or influence seemingly from a supernatural source b: something that seems to cast a spell: ENCHANTMENT 3: the art of producing illusions by sleight of hand

Ok, now we have something to work with...
But does it seem to you, as it does to me, that this definition seems unsatisfactory?
Maybe, because it doesn't convey the feeling, the emotion, the wonder and awe that I associate with the word. It seems a cold definition, sterile and devoid of the true meaning that I feel inside my heart.
My definition?
Who knows, like I said; ambiguous.
Magic can be so many things. It can be a lover's smile. It can be the strange sensation of deja vu. It can be the sensation of wondering how the magician did his last trick. It can be the hackle rising on the back of your neck when you sense someone watching you. It can be the strange lights in the sky that you've never seen before. It can be the wonder of exactly where those darn socks go!
It can be so many things, that's why I see it as ambiguous. What is your definition?
To me, it is all the above and more.

The second ambiguity:
Belief.
Another ambiguous word. But I'll spare you the definition. Basically, what I mean here, is that whether you believe in magic can also be termed in different ways.
Do you believe that magic exists?
Do you believe that people can use magic?
Do you believe that the people who say they can really can?
Are the psychics you see on TV really psychic?

Who knows?
Few if any to be sure.

But as for my beliefs, I believe that the capability for magic exist, that the potential is there.
I believe this, in part, because there are far too many things out there that have no reasonable explanation. The Bermuda Triangle. The river at the Continental Divide. The shack in which you can stand straight at an angle, though gravity works straight up and down. Added to this, what of all the other stories of strange inconceivable happenings? Aliens? Perhaps, but wouldn't that fall under the category of supernatural, as we define natural?
Also, I believe, because in the statement, it says that in every lie, there is a grain of truth. And what is our fiction, other than a lie? And where is the grain of truth? Is it impossible to believe that no such thing as magic could exist, when there are so many people propounding it? I'm not trying to say, that I believe in the magic every author tells about. I'm also not saying that they even come close. But tell me where did it originate? The witches of Salem? The old Greek legends? Stories of Christ? It is my belief that the origination of our word magic, is based on something real.
I also believe, because I have experienced things such as deja vu and clairvoyance. Now don't get me wrong, I'm NOT one of those psychics you see on late night TV. I don't profess to have any understanding or control over the experiences I've had. And in truth, I can't even be sure that the experiences are valid as such. Perhaps I only mis-remembered "that" dream in which I saw something happen before it did. Perhaps I actually saw the incidence in my mind before it registered in my consciousness, thereby giving me the feeling of deja vu. Either way, I was left with the feeling, and believe them to be valid.
And finally, I believe because I want to believe. And perhaps this is the strongest reason. I want to believe that we were destined for something greater. I want to believe that we are capable of transcending the state we're in, and move to a "higher" level. I want to believe, that somewhere in the deep recesses of the unused portions of our brains lies the ability to fly, to move object with our minds, to speak without speaking. I want these things to be true.
So, sit down now, and do as I do on the nights I need to believe in magic.
Sit and stare at an object, any object, and will it to move. Speak to it with your mind, and tell it that you want it to move "there."
You never know, it could happen.

The power of belief is sometimes called Sympathetic Magic. Essentially, believing in something enough can make it happen. Spells would then be constructs to direct your belief. Well done, Christopher. Look for my response as well.

Magic is found in many places, often in words don't you think? Magic is also magic, because you CAN'T define it - it is beyond our range of comprehension and that is its essence. Love your ideas!
