PROMISES How cool!!! The exclamation of the first time. WOW!!! This is sooo cool!!! The second time. WOW MAN!!! The third time and on it goes.... A little white powder... I feel so good!! What can it hurt? Dinner? No, not hungry... but hey! thanks anyway. Thanksgiving AND Christmas with the folks!? Oh no!! What a drag!! But okay, I'll put in an appearance and make nice. Slice of homemade pie? No, not hungry. Sorry ate earlier at a friends house. Hey Man!!! Wazzup!! Ya got any like product man? A dime'd suit me fine as frog's hair for now. Thanks dude!! Nah honey, I ain't hungry. Just save it fer later. I'm goin' out. Be back purty soon. I'm just goin' to get some smokes. Be back soon, I promise. I can give her a bath tonite. You worked today so you can just relax honey. Love ya. Hey! Got anything for a nick? Hey, that's great man! Yeah! Check ya later! Hi Honey I'm back. Gotta go back to the store. Forgot the smokes, saw a couple of friends. Need anything? A Pepsi? Okay. Love ya honey. What do you mean I'm FIRED!!?? Someone says they SAW me and you're just gonna take their WORD for it!!?? Hey man!! Test me!!! Awww...never mind!! I don't need yer stinkin' job anyway!!! Honey... I got fired today but hey sweetie, it's cool. I'll be gettin' unemployment cuz they can't prove nuthin'. Don't worry baby, we're gonna be alright. What do you mean DENIED!!!?? I was wrongfully fired from my job!! I helped pay into that! You can't deny me! I got a wife and kid to support! How am I gonna do that without unemployment!! Honey, things'll be cool. we got that tax money comin' back and then we'll be outta the hole. I'm goin' over to see about a job. Be back later. Hey Man!! Gotta dime? Nawp? How 'bout a nickel? That's doable? Cool? Yeah... that's cool. Know anyone that can help me out on a dime? Okay great!! Be back 'bout 8 or so? Okay... great! Thanks man!!! Didn't find a job honey. Ya know things are real tight out there right now and ya know I can't pass a piss test yet so ya know.. honey I need to think... be back later baby. Don't worry about her... I'll take care of her when I get back. Yeah, just take a nap with her. What time ya gotta go to work tomorrow? 7 to 3 eh? Okay. Love ya. Hey, ya think ya could front me a dime til Tuesday? Well, I'll have to check into that!! Honey, why is the cable disconnected? Why didn't you pay the bill? How much that dumb place payin' you? Honey, you need to find a better job. You ain't gettin' paid enough for the work you do baby. I'm gonna shoot some pool with the guys. Be back later. Yeah dude.. I know it's Tuesday, but man, the check didn't come in and the wife didn't pay the bills. Said there wasn't enough. Maybe tomorra, 'kay? Yeah, scope it later. Honey, can you please shut her up!? I can't hear myself think! I'm goin' fer a walk. Hey man!! Wazzup!! Think I can get a front? Oh, just a nickel. Catcha tomorra on it if that's cool. Great!! What do you mean I look like death? Honey, I look the same as always. Nah, yer just hallucinatin' baby. Serious honey, I ain't touched nuthin' in months. Love ya. No!! Ya ain't takin' MY kid to yer folks. They don't like me anyway and you just wanna make sure they gotta reason. Okay baby.. I know yer right. I really need to slow down. Yeah, I promise I'll go check myself into rehab. Promise... okay? Hey I gotta plan honey. Gotta go pay some dudes. This here check came just in time. Yeah, I'll be back as soon as I can. Hey man! Here's yer money!! Tol'ya I'd get it back to ya. Hey, ya got a quarter? Hey, good deal. Yeah mon... catcha later! Honey, I got all the bills paid, the car insured, and the cable back on. Do you need anything? Shoes? Okay... cool. Just go buy whatever pair ya want. Yeah honey see ya later. Baby I don't feel so good.... bad cough... hard to breathe. Hungry? Nah, not hungry, my kidneys hurt. Honey!! I already tol'ya I quit!! Don'tcha believe me?! No!! I said you weren't gonna involve your parents!! NO!! Okay, I'll go. You go talk to yer folks. Tell them I'll go on three conditions. One that you'll be okay to handle things by yerself, two that they'll be here for ya if you need them fer babysitting or whatever and three, that you stay away from all these friends that wanna stone us. 'Kay? Well, go get them. Dad, I gotta real problem.... but I think I can handle it on my own. If I can't I'll go. Yeah, I said I'd go! No, I understand that your daughter is important to you. I know! I will! I promise!! Can you take the kid fer the night. I really think I need a break. Hey, that's great!! Thanks Dad! Oh man!! Honey, I feel much better! Maybe all we needed was a break from everything. No... I feel better. We'll be alright.... Thanks Roxane. I've never really delved into prose before as I do better (I think) with poetry but this was an attempt. I'm glad you liked it. It was written during a time when my daughter and son-in-law were battling with a drug addiction. They did finally get some help and I am happy to say they have been clean and sober for 3 months now ------------------ Words lay dormant in the recesses of the mind til called forth to a labor of love. BASH-BASH-BASH! That's all the bashing you get from me!  Seriously though, I think you should consider writing more prose. I was absolutely glued to this. I walked with my brother on his way to rehab, after being a junkie for almost seven years. I and my family were forced to stand by and watch him grow thinner, get dirty, and finally come close to killing himself. Then he had a daughter, and thankfully that seemed to wake him up. Other than that divergence though, this is his story. Well done. |

No need to echo my earlier welcome, but there is need to tell you that you wont be bashed here for writing your mind or heart for us to enjoy. As for this piece, 'tis quite powerful as is the powder you speak of, be it cocaine, crystal methedrine, methamphetamine, heroin, PCP, Ecstasy, or a variety of other designer drugs. They all lead to ruin eventually, though to paraphrase Jerry Garcia, "They may be going to hell in a bucket, but at least they're enjoying the ride." ------------------ Pain is life, life is short, I will endure.
