My mind cannot find peace.
Rain drums continuously on the window panes as I look on without seeing. My eyes focus and unfocus, and the streaks of water running down the glass go from sharp to blurry and back again. The sound of each individual raindrop hitting the glass pounds in my head, making me remember. making me remember; taking me back...
My surroundings fade away and we are together. Together outside, with our arms outstretched to the sky as it drenches us with water. We are covered in mud from the creek flowing by our feet, close to overflowing. My mouth is open, my eyes closed, feeling the water drops play upon my cheeks and tasting the drops as they fall into my mouth. You stand next to me, soaking wet from head to toe, but grinning at me with a smile that lights up even the cloudiest of days. Feeling your gaze, I open my eyes and turn to you. Your smile is contageous and I break out into a grin. Feeling suddenly mischievious, I wait until your back is turned, and then I collect a handful of mud from the sodden earth and heave it in your direction. The look on your face is priceless. Laughing gleefully I duck as you fling your own handful of mud at me. Soon both of us are as brown as the puddles we jump in while chasing each other along the banks of the creek. Mud is caked in my hair, and it clings to your shirt as we roll on the muddy ground with laughter at our own appearances. The sound of our gaiety rings out over the sound of the rain pelting onto the ground. I am in bliss. Soon though, we are out of breath and exhausted with happiness, and we simply lie next to each other in the mud and all is quiet as the rain still pours down. Gently you reach over and brush a dirty strand of hair out of my face. Somehow, your hand finds mine and we scoot closer. I lay my head on your shoulder and I close my eyes and just listen to the rain and the beautiful sound of your voice in my ear, whispering softly to me promises of a love that lasts forever.
But the voice fades away, and only the sound of rain remains. My tears fall freely, like salty droplets from my own soul's sky, heavy with emotion it needs to release. So I let it rain, both from my eyes and outside. And I think of how no rain will ever compare to the one shared with you. No rain will ever mean so much as that one rain, that one summer rain...
