In a world full of cyber space, in-your-face technology, and cutting edge life style management solutions, one ponders the seeming insignificance of a medieval thing such as writing. Who has the time? Dual income households are fighting to stay within the economic race, much less trying to win it, all while juggling career advancement, oftentimes children, and retirement planning, to name a few. I have noticed that for some, writing has evolved into a completely new era. The writers of their today are called programmers; people that sit in front of their computers writing in foreign tongues, creating digital masterpieces…programs, web sites, applets. Within the last year or so I have been submerged in this ‘evolution’, due to one of my college majors. Countless numbers of times I have witnessed fellow student programmers literally swarm over a newly written piece of code, giving constructive criticism and praise alike…everyone working together to improve their own and others’ skills.

If my memory serves me right, I’ve been writing smatterings of this-and-that since the age of 10. My first journal was my birthday present that year. Along with my passion for writing came a hearty appetite for reading. And read I did, devouring books like the starving does food. Throughout high school I enrolled in as many writing and literature classes as was allowed. In retrospect, I am in awe at how very little I learned about poetry. The only time I remember touching on the subject of poetry in school was a class period devoted to writing a haiku, and even then all we learned was the syllable count, not the true meaning or concept used when writing one. In light of this, looking back on my past journals I can see skads of content and emotion; however, they are all written in a very poor form of free verse.

Going into college, the siren song of technology called to me, and so off I went to drown myself in the depths of it. Choose my major?…Why, I’ll take Computer Applications Specialist, with the concentration of Webmaster for 1000 please, Alex! Oh hey, and why not Mathematics too, just for the fun of it. Surprisingly enough, my love of writing and reading survived…flourished even. In my life of career, school, and single parenting, writing is a sweet reprieve. When I sit down to write, it is ‘my time’, my happy place if you will. It is a place where stress and worries cannot touch me. In my opening, I asked the question ‘Who has the time?’ For me the question is not a matter of ‘Do I have the time?’ but rather ‘Will I make the time?’

Oh yes, yes I will. Writing, not unlike breathing, is something I will do until the day I die.

One day, during a visit to the lovely land of Yahoo, I submitted a search request. One word: Poetry. What I happened upon that day changed me in ways I still have yet to recognize. Writing in itself is a form of communication and release, as is the Internet. Both of which are incredible interests of mine. What do you get when you combine the two in perfect harmony with each other? Pure bliss…also known as Passions In Poetry. The PIP web site and forums have affected my poetry and myself in several different ways. In its entirety, PIP is my home base, a place for me to give and receive praise, advice, and tutelage. The sense of companionship and friendship in the forums is unmatched. From there, I have been given countless opportunities to broaden my knowledge and skills in writing of any form, be it poetry or prose. Within the hallowed halls of PIP, there is a virtual font of URL’s to a plethora of informative web sites. So many wonders, so little time! To sum it all up, the more exposure I get to Passions in Poetry the more I learn and grow, in writing as well as a person.

How has the Internet affected my poetry? Very well I’d say, very well indeed.

Your writing is impeccable! I find your views to be presented in a clear and concise manner. Further, I think this is one of the most well thought out pieces on any subject I have read to date. Thank you for this example of simply amazing prose.
