PLEASE, read the poem of the Epilogue first!!

With care, Keliath eased herself back from projecting the tale. This lesson was always was always the hatchling's first brush with racial memory, it tending to be overwhelming. She intently watched the swirling rainbow of color that washed across their eyes as they experienced the birth of Dragonkind firsthand. She always had greater concern this first time as it was easy to get lost in the past; Dragon's memories were understandably intense. The only sign of life in the hatchlings was an occasional twitch of skin or quiver of wing. Even the irritating lashing of tail that marked a newborn's exuberant curiosity was stilled.

Satisfied for the moment, that the hatchlings were in no danger, Keliath turned her attention to the offspring of the human cousins. In contrast, they were fidgeting, looking about, and restless. They had a much shorter attention span. As she always was when she thought of them, Keliath was moved to tears. The children were always confused by the tale, they had no racial memory for it to stir. Humans heard only the hollow words, they didn't feel or see it as Dragonkind did. The different perspectives only confused them all the more. Worse yet, humanity had an extremely limited lifespan. Even with all the magecraft at their command, two to three hundred years was the most one could expect to live.

Feeling all of her ten thousand years like a crushing weight, Keliath looked out upon the Birthing Plain with satisfaction. She was last of the Nonborn, those few hundred dragons birthed from the body of the Crystal Dragon. Being Eldest, it was her gravest duty to instruct the hatchlings and children in their genesis. The poem served as a mnemonic trigger for racial memory and made the lesson memorable for the children. DragonMyth they called it, amusing since the human cousins thought it a legend, most of them anyway. Racial memories had no human equivalent save the stolen memories of the DarkMages.

Caught in thought, she noticed Rhion, one of the Sensitive children, slowly edging forward. With deliberate care she swung her drably iridescent head to face him. Taking this oppurtunity to exercise his Talent, she projected a thought at him. *Yes child? What is it that you need?* In spite of his being the strongest telepathic talent she had yet seen, Rhion answered hesitantly. *Teacher, you promised to take us swimming after today's lesson.* *So I did.* she replied. "Run along children. When the hatchlings wake from Reverie, we will all go swimming." With glee, the two score children ran down the slope, laughing. All save six year old Hannah who walked up to her crying. Hannah reached out and placed a tiny hand on Keliath's cheek. Ripples of color spread from that gentle touch. Keliath knew better than to ask what the problem was, Hannah was mute. Her strong empathic Talent had robbed her of the power of speech. With a start of shock and surprise, Keliath felt Hannah desperately trying to force something through the racial link that Dragonkind shared. Having never felt anything of the sort from a human, she froze completely still. With heart-wrenching effort on her small face, Hannah pushed harder. Keliath fell back, stunned, as she felt and relived the Crystal Dragon's love and forgiveness of the cowardly knight. She scooped up the tiny girl and awe-struck, gave her the barest ghost of a hug. Crystal tears clattered down her face to shatter and break on the ground.

Still holding Hannah, she noticed that the hatchlings were awakening from Reverie. Their eyes had all gone dark and the tail lashing abruptly began again. With a flicker of thought she sent them winging toward the lake. Stretching her own wings, she gazed upon the glassy site of the Battle as it reflected the azure sky. Taking a deep breath, the scent of flowers and broken earth along with each myriad scent of life, seemed invigorating and new. Keliath looked at Hannah, exhausted and asleep from her effort, laying in the crook of her arm and took to the air, heading for the lake herself. She reflected that for the first time in all her ten thousand years, the Teacher had been taught a lesson. She smiled and headed for a much deserved swim.

Do I detect the makings of a novel?? Hmmm...interesting. A very excellent story you have created!

Dream, I think this perhaps may be one of the most beautiful things you've written. I too would long to hear more.

Looks like your writing is getting better all the time. And I agree it would make a nice novel.
