I'm almost there .I can feel it! I have been traveling these past four years and I think my journey is finally at an end. Cutting through the over grown thorn bushes, wondering how many, have walked this very same path. I don't know why I'm here. Only that my heart leads me on. I can smell the salt of the sea, feel a fetid breeze against my skin, the fine sheen of sweat upon my brow. But still I push onward. I know not what awaits me. Why me? What does it want of me?
I'm the fourth son of a blacksmith. They called me Mugg. My family was not the richest in the Village, but neither were we the poorest. My oldest brother will follow in my father footsteps the rest of us are left on our own. That is the way of it. One day I felt this calling, deep in my soul. My mind rebelled for a time, but my heart would never let me rest. So from my home and family, and all I knew I walked away. I am no more enlighten now then I was then.
Breaking through the thorns, I see a massive Castle. Perched high on the mountainside. Glistening, darkly shining. The stairs, leading up and up, seemingly endless. But all must come to an end. All is dark, clouds gray and foreboding, hanging low. A stench fills the air, and my unease grows. I can see nothing beyond the castle, as if there is nothing there. Should I turn and go? Should I push forward still? Ah! Yes my heart hears the call only it can hear. Onward I shall go.
Climbing the steep stairs, slowly moving onward. Oh, my Lord! So many bodies! Some, nothing more than skeletal remains, others, more recent in their death. Bodies torn and bloody, a limb askew or missing altogether. Now I know the stench of death. I want to turn and run, but my feet move ever onward. Reaching the summit, I'm faced with two doors. The first is a glorious site. Gold framed, studded with the most exquisite of gems. A king fortune! The second silver, plain and uninviting. At the base of the silver lie the bodies of those who went before me. Their outstretched limb's reaching as if asking salvation. The path to the golden door is free.
I hear my mind say, "choose one and choose wisely. One door hold's the key to your heart's desire, the other only death" I reach my hand out, It 's trembling. Closing my eyes, I let my heart choose. I can feel the cold seeping through my skin. A chill race's up my spine. I turn the knob.
Thinking of my hearts desire, a smile on my face as I remember. I always wanted to be a knight. My brothers and I often played at war and battle. But that was not to be for a lowly blacksmiths son. I knew this to be true at an early age. But boys will play, and dream.
As the door swings wide, a gush of cool sweet air races past me I enter a long hall. The ceiling high, and decorated in gold, silver and gem's. A large airless window, dark shimmering walls, covered in rich tapestries. In front on me stand's the most beautiful creature I have ever seen. Tall and majestic. Covered in glimmering black and gold armor. She is large for her kind. I have never been this close to one of her race before. Her head swings in my direction. Her eye's are the color of the deepest emerald's, and far more precious.
She stare's at me for a time, watching, seeing all that I cannot. "So you have come to my call." she say's .Her voice is deep and raspy from little use, sultry. Hypnotic. I step closer. "Yes. I have come. Why did you call for me? She turn's away and say's" I am tired. Weary from this fight. Come closer, Please." Without fear I step closer to her, her beauty is beyond compare. I feel the warmth of her breath, the heat of her body. I can smell her unique scent, that of a thousand nights, and oddly, I smell death.
"Alone I have been these many years. Your kind want's us gone from this world. I am the last of my race. We were a proud and noble kind. The tale's you tell your young are lies! This you know well. I have need of you. Many year's I have searched for one, who is true of heart, brave and fearless. One who can see past the surface, one who will carry the legend on. I cannot leave this world forgotten." There were tears in her eyes as I yelled, "But I am not the one!" I knew she was mistaken. I have never run from a fight, but am I brave? " Yes, you! You have pasted where many others have failed. You see the beauty in life and have passed the test. Now I am weary, let me rest my head in your lap."
I sat next to her. I was amazed one such as she would trust me so. She lay her head on my outstretched legs. She was truly no burden. She was asleep instantly. I studied her form and face as she slept. Her feature's, much softer in repose. Her breathing eased, as if she had no cares. It was then; I noticed a silver patch in the armor on her chest plate. Oddly, I thought how vulnerable this would make her. Surely she would know. On she slept through the night. Safe, she was in my arms.
Come morning I was startled to find I had also fallen asleep. I felt as if I had let her down. I felt the rumbling of her body as she awoke." Good Morning my Knight. Thank-You for watching over me as I slept. Now I will explain my reason's for you being here. My time is at an end. Oh don't frown so, we all must die. You see this silver in my armor? It is my one weakness. Only a strike to here will bring about my death. But only one, who is true of heart, can see it. Now don't lie! I know you can see it!" I hung my head, what did she want of me? " You are the one. It is your strike I will feel."
No! I can not take the life of this creature! "You are too needed in this world, I cannot!" The look of horror showed clear on my face. "But you must. My time is at an end. So many beautiful things await me. I will move to the next plane, be once again with my family and loved one's. You must!"
We argued on this for days. But, every night in my arm's she slept. We finally agreed to disagree. I told her of my dreams and fear's. In turn she told me of her race, and their battle's. I was held in awe of this creature. How could I not be? We decided that I should learn swordplay and battle strategy. Of this she knew well. We would train during the day, at night she would hunt.
Months passed, our routine never varied. Like an old married couple we became. Content in our relationship. I noticed a strain in her, a wasting away of her soul. When I would ask what was wrong, she would smile sadly and turn from me. I knew I had let her down, but her life was more important.
And then it all came to an end. She returned from the hunt wounded, bleeding. Mortal wound's all. My heart felt torn. I knew the end was near. So did she." I fought bravely. I never wavered. I stood my ground! They're coming near! I couldn't hide well enough this night." Concerned I tried to staunch the flow of blood, but it was useless. Then I heard it. The sound, of an army on the march. Closer and closer it came. I heard their frenzied cry. The sound, of a maddened mob.
"It's me they want! Only my death will appease them this time." NO!! I took up my weapons and went to the gate. I could see their torch lights on the stairs. Hundreds upon hundreds approached. Coming ever closer." Now my love! It must be now!" Turning to look at her, I knew she was right. I knew I would never see the green of her eyes feel the fire of her breath, watch as she spread her wings and took flight. Dragon's realm was at an end. The mob was closing on us. I knew what I had to do. If the mob got to her they would rend her to pieces. With tears in my eyes I went to her. I kiss her dark and lovely face, rubbing against her brow with my lips. " Please my love now. Let my love guide you in your desires". I raised my sword, trembling, looking into her eyes. It seemed as if time stopped, The sword plunged down. Piercing the silver plate on her chest. "Let my love set you free!" She shuddered but once. The light left her eyes. I wept for the love lost.
Suddenly a glow filled the room. As if a thousand candles came to light. It encompassed me, filled me and surrounded me. Peace filled me. I heard a voice in the light. "Your love is true. From this day forth you shall be known as Dragon Heart."
I remember that day, as the year's rolled on. And still I fight in the name of my Lady Dragon. Dragon's Lair is now my home, all I have of her is here. If you hear the sound of wings in the night, remember you're not truly alone.

What a great story! I very much enjoyed this.
