I remember my dad from when I was young. I remember the way he would snap his fingers and point at the dinner table, if he wanted something. I remember the look on his face if my brothers and I misbehaved, and I remember getting spanked when we did something wrong.

I remember the happiest times in my youth, when he was away at war in Vietnam, stationed somewhere else for months at a time or after he retired and his job took him away from the home for days. I remember these times and have to compare them with the times he was home.

Spent the majority of that time in my room, reading, yes that man did give me a love for reading... I remember one night, when the family was watching TV, some show that he wanted to see and no one else did, he made me come out, and my brothers as well, to be together as a family in front of the TV. Mom made us ice cream cones as we watched and my dad asked me for a lick. I handed him the cone and as he licked once, then twice, I made a whine, as 9 year olds are want to do when they fear someone is hogging their ice cream. My father, in a fit of whatever, asked if I wanted my ice cream back, asking me if I wanted to share or not. I said not and he gave me back that cone. Pushed it squarely into my face, smeared it around a bit, and told me "there's your ice cream."

To this day, I don't like ice cream.

JP, I have to tell you that I sincerely feel for you. I, too, have endured such horrible moments in my lifetime. Though, it wasn't my father, it was my stepmother. I pray that you find a way around these horrible memories and that you find peace within yourself. I know that these memories are pure torture to the soul. I am so sorry that you had to live such pain as a child. It hardly seems fair that any of us should have to. I look at these experiences in my life as ways NOT to treat my own children, not that I would ever want to. Thank you for sharing this memory.

Thanks for the sentiments onevoice, although, except for a sincere dislike of ice cream I think my demons are pretty well put to rest.

Truly tragic and illuminating. As one voice has said, I too have many such memories. You might be fortunate in laying that demon to rest.

To JP, onevoice and DE, I am sorry for all of you. My father was wonderful, and it is probably because his father abandoned him, and he put his devils away [we never found out about his father until my own father was near death.] Would I be able, I would have shared my father with you.

thanks sunshine, but my own was more than enough!

Funny thing is, now days we hardly speak, he will stop by and visit on occasion but has no idea why his boys won't make a stronger effort to keep in contact with him.

Perhaps on his death bed he may come to terms with his own demons, fortunately I won't be there to see it (unless medical science finally does do something worthwhile...)

All in all, I feel sorry for him.
